Hey guys,

I plan to visit my girlfriend in the US (Kentucky) in December, it'll be our second meeting after knowing eachother 11 months.

My understanding is that I am able to marry under a tourist visa (my intent is to return to the UK and to finish my education).

However, would this be advisable? Or should we wait?

Some people have told me the marriage has to be well photographed and documented, is this true?

We've not got much money at the moment and we probably will keep it closeted, between the two of us for now without a big reception and such so the pictures wouldn't exactly show much.

We'd like to keep our options open in terms of where we decide to settle - does it matter which country we marry in?

Also, provided it is advisable to marry in the US, how would we go about this in terms of acquiring a marriage licence?

Thanks!

Where you marry does not matter. Yes you can marry on a tourist visa (or VWP) if you intend to return to the UK. Alternatively, she could marry you in the UK. Later you can decide on where to live....but know that going through the US process is not instantaneous and should be planned well before you actually plan to immigrate to the US, so plan ahead.

Small wedding is ok...but yes document it with photos...no need for a big reception. Pictures will show you two and the witnesses and celebrant...all that is needed. But this documentation is if you plan on eventually applying for an immigrant visa for the US. If you plan to live in the UK, IDK what they require.

What is needed to marry in the US varies from State to State, and even from county to county. Have your girlfriend check out the local regulations.

hi,

You can either marry her in US or UK. Later you can decide on where to get the Citizenship. If your intention to get marry in Tourist Visa, it is advisable to get a advice from an immigration attorney.

Hey, any particular reason I'll need an immigration attorney?

However, would this be advisable? Sure Or should we wait? No, why?

Some people have told me the marriage has to be well photographed and documented, is this true? Not exactly.

We've not got much money at the moment and we probably will keep it closeted, between the two of us for now without a big reception and such so the pictures wouldn't exactly show much. Well, whatever the size of the wedding, most people want to have memories of this special event. What do you think the photos should "show?" You don't have to have a lavish wedding.

We'd like to keep our options open in terms of where we decide to settle - does it matter which country we marry in? No, but the gf would need a special visa to marry in the UK, which is not the case in reverse.

Also, provided it is advisable to marry in the US, how would we go about this in terms of acquiring a marriage licence? You just get one. You go and apply and show your IDs. You would show a passport.

Thanks!

Comments in red. Your plan sounds fine. How long until you are done with school? Are you prepared to live apart from your wife during that time?

Thanks a bunch!

I'll be finishing in May of 2014, though my last two years I've not left myself in the best of positions...

I'm keeping my head down so I can secure a job. If a job dosen't show itself immediately, I'll study on to become a teacher.

We're both committed and understand this might take longer than what we expect. We've done well so far, talking online for 5 and a half months before she got here. Though at the moment a bit of relationship management is due. And now we're only 90 days out before it's my turn to go there!
