Finally putting together the documents for my N-400 application, which will go out next week. Here's my checklist:

  1. A photocopy of both sides of my Permanent Resident Card, Form I-551.
  2. Two identical color photographs with my name and Alien Registration Number written in pencil on the back of each photo.
  3. A photocopy of my spouse’s biographic information page of her current US passport.
  4. A photocopy of my spouse’s birth certificate.
  5. A photocopy of our marriage certificate.
  6. Several bank statements from our joint bank account at BofA.
  7. Several bank statements from our joint bank account at Chase.
  8. IRS Tax Return transcripts and Tax Account Transcripts for the last 3 years, showing that the returns were filed as married filing jointly and that there are no past due amounts.
  9. A detailed explanation to Section 10, Number 16 of the N-400, regarding traffic violations.

I suspect that some stuff is duplicative and probably unnecessary. Do you think I should send it out like this, or should I cut it down to the essentials only?

Thanks.

Hi i just sent in my wife's N-400 and sent in pretty much what you did but sectioned off each packet as indicated in the N-400 checklist. I think that you should use that for your guide. I also included anything in the joint information, our rental agreement, joint health insurance and anything else that had both of our names on it. It wasn't alot of stuff and I've yet to hear of anyone on this site that got it rejected. You are probably good. I sent our packet in last Tuesday with tracking and it was there the next day. The check has already been cashed so I guess she is well on her way to U.S. citizenship. I hope and wish you good luck now it's time for both of them to study and know the answers to the citizenship questions.

Ok, thanks. I can add the leases, that would be no problem, or I could take them with me at the interview, just in case they want to see them.

Hello I'm preparing my packet too and I did add also all the joint things we have. I also called USCIS about traffic tickets and 2 lawyers and they said as long as the tickets did not resolt in an arrest or DUI or serious charges then you don't have to tick yes for question 16. The problem is 3 years ago I got charged with careless driving and I don't know if that is a serious charge or not in Kentucky lol. So if you got any ideas I would appreciate it. Thanks and good luck.

I decided to err on the side of caution, tick yes for question 16, and add an explanation of the two tickets I got. Just to give you an idea of the "seriousness" of my citations, one was for driving into a street which was intended for residents only during certain times of the day (my GPS told me to turn, and I religiously followed the indication), the other one was for not paying a toll on a road that had no toll booth where you could possibly pay (you needed to have a transponder in the car, and needless to say my rental car didn't have one, and I had no idea that there was a toll to pay). I got both tickets abroad, in places I had never been before. Am I overly cautions? Possibly. Are they going to deny my citizenship application based on these two incidents? Unlikely. If they do, I will pack my $h!t and move to more friendly shores.

For my husband's citizenship application we sent everything you have on your list except the joint account statements, and a copy of the biographic information on my passport. We thought a copy of my birth certificate would be sufficient. When my husband went for his interview, he took a binder with all the joint account statements, car insurance cards, life beneficiary forms etc. He was not asked to show a single document... except his green card, passport and driver's license.

He also checked section 10, question 16 for two traffic tickets (both cleared through traffic school and paid for-under $500). My husband had paperwork for the tickets with him.The IO asked if my husband had been arrested at any time and my husband said "no". That was that.

He was approved after a 15 minute interview (from start to finish) and had his oath ceremony in May. :)

Good luck to you!
