im probably in the wrong section because im fairly new here on this site someone please help me

I just have a few questions if you could please help me my husband and I got married abroad and I'm trying to petition him to come here I read that it helps to prove our relationship is real with a joint bank account but banks want social security and other documents I'm having difficulty convincing my husband that I can't get him on my account without him being in United states first or am I missing something? he's convinced its possible because his friend made an account with his wife and he's not even in United states yet please help me what am I doing wrong?

I think it depends on the bank. Try and get hold of a human being who you can actually talk to and explain the situation to (which is what we did).

We just got our joint bank account opened (and a new checking account in just my name), and I don't have my SSN or my physical green card in the mail yet. We had to send them a notorized copy of my UK passport & CR-1 visa. You might have trouble before you've got your visa, but again, if you can talk to someone actually at the bank they might be able to do it.

Also, if you're just interested in having a joint bank account while you remain abroad - perhaps the joint account should be in the foreign country? It may be easier to open one that way around and will allow you to operate some funds jointly.

And don't worry too much on the relationship evidence side. Almost no one in the situation of living abroad and bringing their spouse to the US has a joint bank account. Use other evidence instead - boarding passes, passport stamps, hotel receipts, gift receipts, communication logs, etc etc.

Don't worry about a joint bank account at this time. USCIS knows that it is very rare for a foreigner, with no SSN, to be on a joint US bank account. This will come into play two years later when you apply for removal of conditions on your spouse's green card.

For now, just follow "lost_at_sea"'s advice on other evidence which you can have.

I wouldn't worry about this at this stage as it's nearly impossible for many countries without a SSN. I didn't include this with my petition as it's nearly impossible to get at home in the states and even harder in Algeria with all the irrelevant paperwork they ask for, even for a resident. Focus on all the evidence you can get. USCIS and the embassy will understand in this regard.

Agreed!

We did not have one either, it is normal to not have a joint account at this stage when living in two separate countries.

My bank said that since husband is from the middle east it makes them a target for government audits. So until he came to USA he could not be added to any of my bank accounts with Chase or PNC. The manager said there is paperwork they can send to the foreigner but as the manager he has a right to refuse adding him until he can sign in person.

I went to Egypt and put my name on his account at an egyptian bank. We used that as proof.

Also I got him health insurance without a SSN from my work before his arrival

I made him beneficiary for my retirement accounts and stuff

I put his name on my verizon cell phone bill before his arrival

I put his name on 2 credit cards as an authorized user and had him use them overseas

There are other financial cominglings you can do that do not involve a checking or savings account
