Hey, I have been asking loads of questions on here recently so ill try and make this one the last. (for a while at least).

I have submitted all my DS forms and have my medical on the 8th august. Aside from that I am waiting for my visa interview date. I have a slight concern with my passport though. It expires on 14 May 2014. As I understand it you need a minimum of 8 months on your passport left before expiration on the day your visa is issued. Therefore this makes my cut off date September 14th 2013.

Can I renew my passport between now and my visa interview and that be ok and take my new passport down to London? The DS form that asks for your passport information has my current one on it. I have heard that as long as I take my old one along with my new one and it has the same full name and country of citizenship on it that will be fine. Do I need to inform them prior to my interview that I have had done this?

Thank you very much for any help/advice you can give.

It's a minimum of 6 months not 8. You can renew your passport at any time as long as you have it for your interview. If you do renew your passport update any forms that had your old information on it and bring it to the interview. :)

The London embassy website says 8 months, but I have definitely seen 6 months from other sources. I am a little confused as I cant seem to get one answer consistently as to what the actual length of period is. If it is 6 months then I hopefully should be fine without renewing.

Also, it was the DS-156 (the one where you have to continue before you can print) form that asked for the passport details, so if I do fill out a new one and take it to the interview with me in the case I do renew my passport, will it still come out as the same barcode, barcode number and scan square thing as my original? will they want the same one of those things?

Follow the London instructions. They are the ones issuing your visa.

You may take a new passport. Good idea since it's a lot more expensive to get a new passport in the US from the British consulate in Washington DC. Plus you won't want to be mailing off your passport for 8 weeks or so right in the middle of your adjustment of ststus when you will need it for various things like biometrics, Social Security card, interview.

The barcode thing is a compilation of what you typed on the form. It's a way to scan the barcode and populate their computer with your answers. If you change one letter, the barcode will change. They can change your data manually at the interview.

A freshly renewed passport is valuable for the reasons mentioned and more. Renew it now, if you can.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).
