VIDEO | A warning for passengers of taxis

MANILA, Philippines - Seaman Larry Jun Olis had taken a taxi going home from the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3 on Wednesday afternoon when the unthinkable happened.

After paying the driver of the white Toyota Vios, with plate number TYR 919, upon arriving at his boarding house along Quirino Avenue in Manila, he stepped out of the taxi to get his luggage from the trunk.

The cab immediately sped away. He ran after the car to call the driver’s attention. The driver of a passing truck witnessed the incident and honked after the cab driver as well, to no avail.

While Olis managed to keep his laptops safe, his clothes, documents, and other gadgets were gone.

View the video below to see his message for commuters like him.

Yes, exactly. I already knew of this trick, which is why on both of my Manila trips, I always took my luggage with me to the backseat.

Another way to avoid this is to have your fiance stay in the car until you have your luggage in your hand, if there is a lot of it and needs to be in the trunk.

You can also write down the number of the cab and report it.

good.gif In short, use your common sense.

I'm just quite sad for the guy on the video. Most seafarers and OFWs don't have it easy and in less than a minute, all that hard work is robbed away by no less than a fellow Filipino. sad.png He must have been excited to distribute pasalubong to his family and enjoy a few weeks or months of spending time with them before he boards the ship again. Now he'd need to put his attention on recovering his lost documents.

Still glad to know he is physically safe.

ya, that's some real big sh|t.

an OFW comes back and most of this stuff is stolen by a fellow countryman.

Manila taxi drivers are the worst in all of RP. I lived in Cebu and had to travel to Manila for business. Many times would get in a taxi to be told 800pesos. I would explain it is a 250p ride to my hotel as I do it often. The lazy "hockey" puck would rather sit then make some money. Many times I would cuss him/them out and get back out. Not that I could not afford the difference,,, more over principle not to screw the foreigner.. And with my tip he would have received 250p tip for 500p total.. I would always keep my cpap machine and lap top in the back seat with me. I would wait to pay after I got out and retrieved my luggage from the trunk. It also forces him to help me with my luggage to get his fare :)

It is sad they would cheat their own like in the video... But we know that in their culture it is okay to cheat then go to church on Sunday. Many times the taxi driver would try to cheat me with higher fare. Then if he did finally take my fare as we drive to my hotel we pass a church and he gives the catholic cross prayer.. I am thinking ####### just tried to cheat me and now you are praying. Geeeeeeeeezz.. Welcome to the Philippines... lol

manila really has horrible taxi drivers. not many cities in the philippines have taxis but taxi drivers outside manila are not ad evil. the dotc manila and mmda need to do something. a functioning service/complaint center needs to be established

when I wad living in baguip, taxi drivers there give back your change even if it is just a peso!

I never trust Taxi drivers in Manila. So whenever my Fiance visits me, we make sure we make the arrangement from the hotel where we stay.

It will cost only from Php. 600-1,000 (less than $25). It is better to pay more rather than saving a small amount of money rather than relying on Taxi drivers.

SAD but true i always tell him never displays his Iphone, wallet, etc in public area. I'm always on guard just to make sure that nothing nasty happens to us.

My fiance knows how to get pissed at the taxi drivers. She just tells the driver to immediately let us out if she feels we are being scammed due to me being an American. And always follows through on this threat, we've done that a few times.

There's also the " I have no change " trick. If that happens I will tell the driver, keep driving around the block until my change is gone. LOL We're going to try to avoid Manila next trip and fly into Cebu.

Not always the best idea if you are in a seedy section of town.

I still prefer jeepney travel when I am in Manila. When we in the province we always take tricycles.
