LOL! Thanks Darnell! I'm not a fan. Besides, I don't think I want to put my little monster in it and go all PI-style! smile.png

You have any buddy that is not working, that has a car, that your husband can sub-contract and pay a low monthly fee for getting you around town? I think you're in for a longish wait on 'paperwork' that Georgia will accept , so time to make serious 'other' arrangements for mobility.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

Georgia requires one of these:

Visa Waiver; also requires Unexpired Foreign Passport

Unexpired Foreign Passport with a valid US Visa and valid I-94 or I-797; also requires I-766, I-20, or DS -2019

I-766 (TPS - Temporary Protected Status)

I-766 (non TPS); also requires Unexpired Foreign Passport

I-551 or I-551 Stamp with photo on I-94 form

I-551 Stamp; also requires Unexpired Foreign Passport

I-94 (Asylee status)

I-94 (Refugee status)

Certificate of Citizenship

Certificate of Naturalization

Unexpired Foreign Passport with Immigration Status of A, B, E, H, I, L, O, P, Q, R, or S

Are any of those an EAD or something that a K1 holder would have while waiting for AOS?

Edit: I googled "I-766" and that is the EAD.

Yes.

So Georgia is no different than Arizona, the EAD is valid to use, do not need to wait for the Green Card. For backup I would bring the I-797 Notice of Action showing the I-485 has been filed.

If someone at Georgia motor vehicles said they NEED to have a green card, they don't know their head from their ash.

It appears that Georgia accepts the EAD same as Arizona so it would only be a couple month wait to receive that once AOS is filed (with EAD & AP). But the I-797 is listed as an accepted document also, so they could bring the NOA for the I-485.

Its seems the problem is more like "idiot behind the desk" than a document issue.

Thank goodness we have the EAD and I-797 options. We'll be getting the car next month, so we'll see about that.

Thanks guys!!

In PA, I needed my GC to get a license... Wouldn't accept ead. But they did give me a 5 yr license. Some states will only issue the license for the duration of your greencard (2yrs). I suggest letting her study the manual right away so she can pass the test the first take :)

My Journey:

We met through a study-abroad program in Shanghai, China in August of 2009

We got engaged March of 2010

I received my K1 VISA in 6 months (June-December 2010)

We were married 04/02/2011
I received my conditional 2-year greencard (AOS) in 2.5 months with no interview (April-June 2011)

Our son was born 02/03/2013

I received my masters degree in Speech-Language Pathology 04/17/2013

I received my 10-year greencard (ROC) in 3 months with no interview (March-June 2013)

My husband returned from deployment 06/20/2013

My naturalization journey took 4 months (April-August 2014)

I became a US citizen on 08/01/2014

Received passport in 3 weeks (regular processing)

Thank you, VJ! smile.png

Actually PA accepts the EAD and certain 797s , so here is another state with nimrods behind the desk that "say" a green card is required when that is BS.

My wife got her's here in GA about a year ago or so. You got to pass a test. If you get just the "learners permit" it's just written. If you get the full blown one you have to take a driving test.

You will need your SS card

Green card or proof that you are here legally

You are also going to need something to prove you live where you live. I,e, a Bank statment

Lol I wouldn't be surprised. They did give me a hard time. Lucky for me my GC came just 2 weeks after the ead :)

I've been studying it while I was waiting for the NOA2. Was doing practice tests too. I downloaded the PDF file of the manual. Since I got here, I didn't have the time as there are a lot of activities here and there plus taking care of my son full time. I may need to re-read and do the practice tests at night when the little monster's sleeping. LOL :)

I think this would be a good topic to keep at the top in the AOS section, so people know to get on the internet and download the required documents list for their state. Then when they get an "idiot behind the desk with more opinion then knowledge" he/she can be called out and if necessary demand a supervisor.

Yep the regs say EAD, but they wouldn't accept it at Warner Robins or Perry. Both places called Atlanta and had some bozo supervisor tell me that it was GC or nothing. I even printed it an showed them, all they said was "next".

In any case the GC came about a week later. Pain in the butt that it expires with the green card, then you have to renew when you file for ROC and get the extension letter; then renew again when you finally get the 10 yr green card.

Good info. My wife was just telling me hers expired with her green card. I did not know that. Not that she uses it anyway.

One o four good friends got her learners permit in the Warner Robins office before her GC got here ( which was about 2 months ago), but it was good for a only a short time. At least that is what was explained to me.

Macon has a new DMV at the train station that is really nice. we only waited about 10 mins on a Sat morning.
