Hey all, we are almost done the NVC stage and hoping for an interview date soon, but I have one question. My interview will be in Montreal, but I just want to know how long I will have to stay there. If the visa is approved, do I need to wait in Montreal until the paperwork is ready, or do they give me my passport back right away so I can fly back to vancouver the next day? Is the stuff mailed to me?

Thanks for any help :)

You don't need to stay in Montreal; you can go home after the interview. The passport will not be returned to you after the interview. You can fly domestic with just your driver's licence, no need for a passport.

For Canada, you have to sign up on the CSC site and choose a DHL/Loomis location for your passport/visa to be sent back to you, so you can choose whichever is closest to you in Vancouver. If approved at the interview, the passport and visa is typically sent out within a few days, but could take a few weeks.

Although K1 visa applicants are lucky enough to interview in either Vancouver or Montreal (whichever is closer), for IR-1/CR-1 applicants (like the OP), the only consulate/embassy in Canada that does those type of interviews is in Montreal, hence why they're going there.

Honestly, I don't know why they don't have IR-1/CR-1s through Calgary, Vancouver, or some city that isn't Montreal. Given the size of our country, it's not as though this is easy to reach for everyone. :)
