If Marian acted the most morally (and I think she did) then it's based mostly on her intentions being the best, right? We all basically agree that ANYTHING is ok if done for love? That would be the guiding principle here?

Or selflessness?

Robin Hood, Little John, Maid Marion, The Sheriff

You are a moralist with conventional ideas, which some people would call old-fashioned.

Men: You probably consider yourself a fair-minded man in a world which falls badly below your standards. Your inhibitions and sense of guilt are in the way of your happiness.

Women: Unlucky in love? Perhaps you hope for too much in a man. Be a realist, not a romantic.

This combination represents 5% of total, 5% of men and 5% of women

Well, I wouldn't say anything is ok. I don't really see anything at all wrong with Little John.

Actually I agree with Steven on this.

And I don't see how you can call it rape if you agree to it. To me, rape implies something you aren't willing to do.

Try to put it in a more personal perspective.

If your husband had somehow landed himself in jail and the guard offered to let him go if you slept with him, would you do it? What do you think your husband would think about that?

Allah tries his chosen people through many hardships, but those who persevere through adversity, surrendering themselves before the will of Allah, shall be blessed with a superb reward.

-The Prophet Muhammad (SAW), as reported by Anas bin Malik

A time will come when the sky is torn apart; when the stars scatter, and the ocean drains away; and when the graves are tossed about, and laid open. At that time every man will be told what he has done, and what he has failed to do; and every woman will be told what she has done, and what she has failed to do.

-Qur'an, Al-Infitar, Surah 82:1-5

Oh, there's a whole back story to it, Jenn. :P Just like the little tidbit about Maid Marion liking to be called ####### in the bedroom by Robin. They could have had some really passionate make up sex that night. :P

Ok, now you're just being weird. :P

But he acted pretty much out of self-interest, as far as I can tell. He was an opportunistic vulture and that's kind of gross.

Now I just want to watch Robin Hood: Men in tights

robin_tight_1.jpg

We're men, we're men in tights.

We roam around the forest looking for fights.

We're men, we're men in tights.

We rob from the rich and give to the poor, that's right!

We may look like sissies, but watch what you say or else we'll put out your lights!

We're men, we're men in tights,

Always on guard defending the people's rights.

Actually I agree with Steven on this.

And I don't see how you can call it rape if you agree to it. To me, rape implies something you aren't willing to do.

I think that definition of rape is too narrow. If someone says they will kill your husband (as has been mentioned before, ie. Robin's head on the chopping block) if you don't have sex with them. You would not define that as rape because there was consent? And if so, then the person who gave you that ultimatum has done nothing wrong - they had consent.

But if he was in love with Marion, then by what you said earlier, what he did must be ok.

I'm just curious if that is one of the "morals" we have as a society. I don't think I think anything is ok just because of love. So is it love or selflessness that makes Marian the most moral?

I think what little John did was noble and moral, but not as much as Marian. she sacrificed. He didn't.

If someone says they are going to kill your husband if you don't sleep with them then that's blackmail. The person who blackmailed you is morally wrong in the first place. It may not be literal rape, but you certainly can't say the woman was consenting, not really.

But was she thinking of anyone else's feelings when she sacrificed? I mean, did she think how Robin would feel about it?

I find this all so interesting. Honestly, I struggled when ranking Marion and Little John. I do see Marion's actions as immoral, however, they were mitigated by her intentions and the fact that she was "forced" into it. I don't see John's opportunism as immoral, which is why I ended up ranking him above Marion.

Robin Hood being the worst was a no-brainer for me, and I can't be convinced that he's not the worst of the bunch.

Actually I agree with Steven on this.

I guess I would say that there is a category of sexual relations that is neither rape nor consentual. And I think that category is closer to rape than consentual sex, as you said not "literal rape", but not moral either.
