Okay, My friend is in a bad pickle.

She is a permanent resident. And eligible for Citizenship.

She just noticed that all her IDs are expired.

Driver's liscence.

Green Card

Passport.

No State ID ever.

She tried to get an INFOPASS, but they didn't let her in the building as her driver's lic is expired.

Driver's lic won't renew her ID, bcz her green card is expired.

She is not sure what to do,

Should she apply for citizenship, or can she?

What are her options?

Thnx

Just chiming in here - a foreign passport renewal should not be impacted by her ability to get other ID. Jump all over having that filled out and expedited, because she'll probably want it for lack of anything else.

She would be well advised to try and see if her secretary of state might be willing to renew her State ID card or something to the effect of it. But her best bet will probably be to come with passport in hand to the Infopass appointment.

Thanks, Autumnal

So, this is what we did. We sent an expedited form to the USCIS for renewal of her GC.

I pray she doesn't get pulled over in the meanwhile on an expired driver's license.

I will pass on the idea of the secretary of state to her.

Thanks, all of you, a lot of help found here.

What ID is she planning to show when she goes to the biometrics appointment? I have read differing accounts of some people saying expired IDs were fine and others saying they were not, for the purposes of biometrics.

Yes, good thought!!! We never thought about it???

They are not gonna let her in the building when she goes for the appointment!!!

Do they really do the bio for renewal of 10-year GC, it is not like she is getting it issued for the first time.

Hmm, quite a situation this is.

Good thinking Hypnos, thanks for the poniter.

I will ask her to call USCIS when her bio letter comes, and ask what to do to get in the building.

The state secretary thing, i wonder how she is going to do that, but I will update her on these new hiccups that are awaiting her.

Good thinking, thanks.

ANy other ideas?

What ID is she planning to show when she goes to the biometrics appointment? I have read differing accounts of some people saying expired IDs were fine and others saying they were not, for the purposes of biometrics.

State of Wisconsin wouldn't even renew my wife's probationary driver's license with a an expired green card with that stupid one year extension notice. That really upset me, so i called the governor's office, after spending a week explaining to the new immigration officer how the USCIS works. They gave my wife a full non-probationary driver's license.

This is a state dependent issue, but if you state says you have to have a valid green card or other proof of US citizenship like a birth certificate, you have got to have these. Wasn't always this way, when I first moved to Wisconsin, just wanted to see my Illinois drivers' license. Or in other states, just the drivers's license from the last state.

Can only state my experience with the St. Paul and Miwaukee field offices. Would always drop my girls off first, then walk in and just time them I was with them. And as long as I was not carrying an AK-47 or even tens times as worse as that, a cell phone, had no problem with entering. Never had a green card in my life. But seems like a simple explanation of showing an expired green card that has to be renewed is even more grounds to enter. I find her lack of entering a field office even with an expired green card to be far fetched.

Positively no value of having a valid foreign passport unless you want to leave the country. Only thing with the USCIS is you need that to get an I-551 stamp to prove your LPR status that you are legal to work and travel. But that isn't even necessary, can bring in two passport type photos and apply for an I-94 to get that same proof. We had to do one or the other as my wife's conditional green card one year extension notice was about to expire. Telling the guard that was our reason for entry was perfectly valid, its your responsibility to keep yourself legal.

We also took in our canceled personal check and I-751 copies as proof we did file in time and that the USCIS indeed receive our application. Can't beat a canceled personal check as proof you paid the fee.

Did turn out to be a wasted 450 mile trip for us, just five days before her one year extension expired, her ten year card came in. But we didn't know that at the time.

Since we did have a slightly different life instead of the USCIS, put a sign on our refrigerator door to remind us to send in our I-751 at the earliest possible date, that sign was there for 21 months, replaced by another for US citizenship. Now replaced with IRS taxes since they don't send out reminders anymore. It's almost like the government wants you to forget so they can hang you. Like selective service if that applies, they already know you are an LPR, so why don't they send you a post card for a reminder?
