It is not required, but comes in handy for opening bank accounts together or getting added to one. Same for getting on health insurance, auto insurance, signing leases, credit cards, filing taxes, and any number of other reasons that may pop up.

it sure makes life handy, when attempting to participate as a human in the USA.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

I'm aware of the long term importance of SSN. My question was rather can we save ourself multiple trips to the Social Security office to change status, name etc. and rather go there for the first time with a Green Card in the hand.

I wouldn't go that far to degrade humanity to a number.

You can wait. Some people want to establish joint bank accounts prior to their greencard interview and are turned away without a SSN. Some people want to be able to work or drive right away after greencard and experience further delays of a month or two waiting on manual verification. If you have no need for establishing anything joint prior to the greencard, or her working this year, then don't get one. It would involve two trips to SSA--first trip to get a number, second trip after greencard to get "not for work" wording removed and name change. Not saying every bank is like this or every person needs manual verification at SSA. Just pointing out frustrations others have encountered and posted about. Edited by Nich-Nick

That's Ok ! It's already done for you - heck, even *I* did not have to do any work in the degradation of your lass - it was done for you by *our* federal government and transcends all.

I suppose we're lucky the SSN isn't required for the breathing bits, at least the air is still free.

Two Trips to a SSA office? You're worried about that, really? OK !
