I am not living in the US currently, and am planning to move back with my wife and daughter after my current work contract expires. Therefore, I will not be able to prove by myself that I can support her once we have moved.

My parents who agreed to sign the Affidavit of Support, but I just discovered that they had an overall negative gross income. We are now looking at assets as an option. However, I don't know how to properly calculate the amount of assets that they need.

Let's say they need to show approximately $25,000 in income. To substitute assets, they must display five times this amount -- $12,500. What I'm unclear about is how negative income factors into this equation. If their overall income was -$5,000 do they still need to show just $125,000? Or do I add the negative income to the required positive amount for a total of $30,000 -- which means that my parents would need to show $150,000 in assets?

Perhaps I should start looking for a new sponsor...

Negative income would not be counted, jsut the assets.

Yes. As you are using assets only, and of a co-sponsor rather than your own, you'll be wanting to be comfortably over, not jsut a few dollars, to be reasonably confident in an approval.

That should be possible. My main concern was that the difference between the required income and the negative income would be "combined," so to speak, which (let's just say as an example) would have made the requirement $50,000 (instead of $35,000 for a 5-person household).

Multiply that by 5, it's a totally different ballgame.

Remember when it comes to assets the positive value of the primary home usually isn't allowed under the theory to liquidate it would cause undue harm. You parents need to cover only the non USC involved plus their house hold ( I assume your daugther is a USC ? ) so it is them, any minor children in their home and your wife

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.
