filing AOS - question regarding name placement

Hello,

I'm helping my wife with her AOS filings. We have not changed her name to my surname yet.

It might seem like a stupid question but not sure how to put her name on the forms where it does not specifically say FIRST, MIDDLE, LAST. If it just asks to write the name of my spouse should I write it as FIRST, MIDDLE, LAST as we normally do in the US?

Also how should she sign these docs? As normally signed in the US (FIRST, MIDDLE, LAST)? Or as used in many other countries where its LAST name first?

I found this link on VJ but would like some additional opinions if anyone has any.

Thanks for any advice!

So the issue is that Chinese names go with the family name first. On the Olympics I have noticed that they have started putting the family name in caps, which is helpful, like BO Zhang and Sue SMITH, for a made up example. (this is for anyone who doesn't know this reading this thread).

So on the forms, I would put last name in the last name box like so. For times when it just says to give the full name, I would put in Chinese order and then give an explanation on a separate sheet (they will know this but it's good to remind them).

Or you could put in western order and also attach a separate sheet with an explanation (because it will be different than Chinese documentation).

I think either is okay as long as you document the reason, though I think the first way is better. Good luck.

AOS for my husband

Thanks for your feedback, I think that sounds like the best idea!

Hey there:

So, my country also goes Last name first, and then first name second, and then middle name the last part. On the form, I filled it the US way, so I wrote my last name where the last name goes to, wrote my first name where the first name goes too, and wrote the middle name where that one goes on the form. And when signing I wrote it the "American way", that is first name then last (skipping middle name as I never use my middle name unless for ID, DL, passport etc.). They didn't sent any RFE, and didn't deny my application and got it approved quiet fast without any hassle...I would say, she could go the same way I did (seems like China goes the same way as my country when it comes to name order). Same way, in my country we write the date as YY/MM/DD but I wrote everything in the "American way" MM/DD/YY unless form specifically asked for DD/MM/YY.

Good luck!
