So my wife wants to take her wedding and engagement ring with us to Manila and Boracay when we go. Myself and some of her Filpina friends here in the U.S think she should leave the engagement ring here (ill get a safe deposit) and just take the wedding band. She disagrees but i think the risk of being robbed is probable because of the ring.

Sounds like she wants to proudly show her symbol of marriage to you to her people back home.

I risked taking the expensive diamond engagement ring to Manila in order to propose to her with it, and left it with her. She has worn it mostly around her house since then, but has only worn it out once, and even then, she kept it hidden in her pocket until she got to her work (she wanted to show it to her people at work). It is just too risky to wear it around a third world country, especially when using transportion such as buses, jeepneys, airports, and the like. Pickpocketing is notorious in Manila, and it makes no sense to have something on display like that, much less in your pockets.

From my way of thinking there are a couple issues here. How much are the rings worth? (you don't have to tell us - just saying something for you to consider). I don't wear expensive jewelry when I travel anywhere internationally, just as a precaution. Not just a Philippines thing.

Depending on value they will be covered by your homeowners/renters insurance, no matter where you are. If they are really valuable you can insure them separately.

But the real issue is if they appear to be valuable (big diamond) does wearing it make your wife a potential target? Maybe so. But honestly, is that just in the Philippines? Lots of jewelry gets stolen in the good ol USA too. Maybe I am just cheapidea9dv.gif but that's one reason I am not a big advocate of expensive engagement rings.

Anyway these are all things for you to consider. Your homeowners probably covers the rings. But whether a big rock makes her a target is something to consider.

BTW, our avatar shows a pic of our engagement with Janet holding up the ring. I don't think you can even see the stone haha. Its nice a nice ring though but not something that will likely get targeted by a thief.

I never took off my engagement ring ever since my fiance proposed to me last year, even when I'm out alone. There are possibilities of theft maybe, but I guess it depends on how your wife carries it. Sometimes it depends on where you're going too. Pick pocketing is not too widespread in my city so I'm not that worried. Although I always make sure that the stone is hidden every time I'm out. It'll be okay as long as she's cautious. :)

My wife, while she was in Manila, would wear only her wedding ring. Her promise ring was kept safe at home not because she didn't want to wear it, but because she worked with her hands a lot and was worried about losing a diamond (She lost a diamond on her engagement ring and about cried. I took it home with me and returned it to her fixed when I returned to Manila before her interview.) . She did do a lot of traveling by jeepney and was worried about theft so she turned her rings inward or left them at home when she was out. When she was with me she was not worried about the rings and worried more about her husband being kidnapped. :D

Thanks everyone i just would rather lean on the cautious side. I know she wants to be able to show her friends and family but i think safety is more important unless someone can recommend a good insurance company for jewelry. Its not an expensive ring but its expensive nough for me lol.

I think she is fine to wear it, as long as she avoids really bad areas etc. The bigger fear is taking it off and leaving it in a hotel room in boracay and having it stolen. So really make sure to read the trip advisor reviews if a place is safe etc.

During the first few days or weeks wearing my engagement ring, i was very nervous. I used to turn my ring inward whenever i go out of Eastwood. One day i was riding in a jeepney to get a police clearance, there was this woman who was staring at my ring. idk what she is thinking but she was really staring at my ring from the time she saw me. i then stepped out of the jeepney when i noticed her; then transferred to a bus (also bec it was too hot in the jeepney and traffic :D) .. same when i was in Robinsons supermarket here in Eastwood, a man was staring at my ring.. so far no one tried to grab the ring on my finger.. they just looked at the ring and me...

with regard to bringing the ring in Boracay, just be careful.. there were incidents where tourists lost their belongings while leaving it in the hotel.. before bringing the ring, check if the stone is loose.. if there is a rattling sound when u shake the ring, then it indicates that the prong had loosened.. also once in the water (boracay beach) still watch out for the ring as sometimes it can loose in our finger while in water esp if it is not tight.. also, i do not recommend leaving the ring in the hotel unless the hotel has a vault. do not leave it to anybody unless u really trust that person so much..or better just have it on the finger and keep an eye on it..or always close ur hand

And in Manila, I've been to Divisoria and Quiapo wearing my ring..riding in a bus and jeepneys.. so far no one tried to steal it from me.. when i feel like there is something fishy. :D, i turned my ring inward and close my hand.

In short, just be keen observant with the people around you.. do not expose the ring too much.. ;)
