My fault - I didn't use a big enough font, or enough 1 syllable words.

The Holocaust is like anything else - you find out about it by absorbing information from many different sources.

When we're talking about a specific information source such as a news report - you can only criticize it effectively by actually experiencing it for yourself IMHO.

An even simpler and more relevant example: Would you buy a film review magazine if all of the review content was written by people who hadn't 'watched the movie' or 'read the book'. Would you take those reviews seriously?

Why is it absurd? You've not actually established that BTW... Incidentally we're not talking about first hand knowledge of a historical event - we're talking about the content of a specific piece of journalism. Hence comparisons to the Holocaust are ludicrous.

I guess you don't need to read any books - because you know all the stories. Given that mind-set its a wonder you can enjoy any entertainment media at all - you must know the ending of every show, not to mention that you can probably predict with 100% certainty exactly what will be playing on the TV when you switch it on. That my friend, is not only ridiculous - its insane.

Please explain it to me. Please use some of that "formidable" knowledge and experience - I haven't seen any on display so far - in fact, you're whole MO has been to rubbish my posts but add nothing of your own.

Again. Please explain to me the problem with the CNN report that you didn't see.

My contention - the flaw in the report is not the "insurgent video". You can dance around all you like - but you continually avoid dealing with that one issue. I wonder why that is.

A couple of questions I thought I'd pose to a wider audience resulting from something that surfaced in another thread.

Can a person claim an authoritative opinion on say, a movie or a piece of journalistic reporting without actually having watched the material that they are commenting on?

This bothered me to no end in college. I had several professors who would lecture on some historical figure and some paper that they wrote and then produce some claim on it. I would ask if the professor actually read it..."Well, no. But it is thought to be a general fact." If you are going to teach on something READ IT FIRST.

Did you see the video recording the death and beheading of any of the U.S citizens that were beheaded for propaganda purposes?

No? Then what's your opinion of such videos? Are they newsworthy? Should they be shown by news organizations?

The "world-weary" Robert Forster act is getting a bit long in the tooth now my friend. BTW - I got myself a "practical" perspective. I watched the report and "suspended judgement" until I had watched it in its entirety. That's a little more than a technicality, but ok As I said the video represents perhaps 20% of the entire report, but I guess 20% is all you need to render a judgement.

Perhaps you can tell me who the reporter interviewed and what he said. Don't bother looking up the story, I bet you can tell me off the top of your head, seeings as you can comment without following the story.

We are not talking about an absolute truth here, hence I see you've dropped the Holocaust now - we're talking about the quality of a piece of a specific of journalism. A lot of people including yourself seem to make large sweeping statements about the media - you're so convinced about that but when confronted with a specific piece of journalism you have else but generalisations to bring to the table.

What are you afraid of?
