White people live in Africa. So a white South African moving to the US is an African-American. Like I said before.. Politically correct idiots consider all Black-Americans as African-Americans whether they are from Africa or not.

open your minds people

I understand your argument but I don't think a white person from Africa can legally

call himself "African American" in this country.

They would really be more African-American than most black Americans. I met a white South African at a party that immigrated to the US. He took great pride in calling himself a true African-American.

lol im gonna pos it again - who says they are continent-american besides african-american when referring to american citizens who are black????

who says "I am European-American"?? Asian-American I have heard a little, but still my friends refer to themselves as Chinese-American or Korean-American. I can just see it. I am South American-American vs. I am Brazilian-American.

Obviously Australian-American would be used.

I addressed Australia. It makes no difference to me, but those who are pointing out that people who live in Africa and come here are truely African-Americans, I am supposing they wouldn't refer to themselves in this way.

Do you have a better term? Before the Civil Rights movement they were called 'colored' in this country, or negro. Most people would take offense to that if you called them either of those terms. I think you're oversimplifying it and making a big deal out of nothing. I've heard people called themselves European Jew, Italian-American. It's a way of describing themselves. Why does it matter to you what people want to call themselves?

Australia is not considered a continent everywhere in the world. I was taught in school that there are 4 continents- America, Eur-Asia, Africa and Anartica.

german shepard? or maybe labrador? How about border collie?

I'd say german shepards. I had a 60 lbs one that was madly in love with my 6 lbs cat, and I think she loved him too...

Don't you think that's somewhat wrong though? I mean, why should a black person, who was born here in the U.S. and has never even set foot on Africa get to call themselves an "African-American," while a white person who may have been born in Africa, and then immigrate to the U.S. can't call them selves an "African-American?"

There's no question that "African-American" is a bit of a misnomer (just like

"American" itself is a misnomer -- it should really be "USAmerican".) It also

has the effect of leading people to overlook the cultural variety and differences

within the African continent, since many might think of Africa as a homogeneous

entity (which it's not.)

However, I can accept the fact that "African American" today is just a synonym

for "black" and does not necessarily refer to an American whose ancestors

were from Africa.
