I'm the beneficiary of an I-129 F visa process (August filer - 256 days and still waiting) ... I'm wondering if I have a choice about going for permanent residency or citizenship. I would like to keep my status from NZ as I am hopeful we may come here to retire... one day.... anyone out there know about this or able to direct me?

Many thanks in advance for any thoughts...

(Really hoping CSC continues to push the approvals out till they have caught up!)

The K1 leads to a green card (= legal permanent residency). You have no choice in that. You DO have a choice as to whether you want to become a US citizen- you can stay a greencard holder all your life, but there are certain drawbacks (some jobs require citizenship, you need to maintain your residency in the USA etc). If your home country allows dual citizenship, that bis the best option (I have three now :) )

When you arrive to the USA, marry and adjust status, you will become a permenant resident. After a few years you will be eligible for citizenship but you do not HAVE to petition for it.

Many countires allow dual citizenship. I am readying my petition for naturalization now, but will maintain my canadian citizenship as well

good luck
