Hello VJ family! Greetings from Ghana. Does anyone have experience with applying for a K-1 visa while the beneficiary is still a student? He plans to continue with school in US after we are married. Is there anything thing we can do to cover our butts with the visa? I'm sure getting a sponsor is one suggestion but is there anything else? Thanks in advance.

The occupation of the beneficiary, and whether the beneficiary has a salary or not, is not important. What is important is the salary of the USC petitioner, as they will be financially responsible for the beneficiary once he is in the US.

If the petitioner does not have annual income of 125% of the poverty level (I believe), then a co-sponsor is needed. Somebody else will need to give some more country specific information about co-sponsors.

Good luck with your journey!

Thank you so much that is really helpful information!

The beneficiary is currently a student in Ghana (west Africa). Thanks.

My now husband was a recent graduate of University of Ghana when he went for his interview. Nothing was asked about schooling in his interview. I dont know why this would be an issue. Transferring credits can be difficult...

Shouldn't be an issue at all. I only asked where because there would be other options if he was studying in the US.

If I understand this correctly there should be an issue with him not doing his national service or his current financial status as a student?

His financials has nothing to do with the K-1. The petitioner has to have the financial ability to sponsor or get a co-sponsor.

We made the choice on national service, Its a personal choice. I would research it to make your choice in the mater.

My husband is studying here now as well - but a lot of scholarships/fin aid is not available for non-citizens. Something to keep in mind.
