With Richard's Oath ceremony looming (we hope) I checked the Passport site and it appeared that first time Passport applicants they must be applied for in person. Did I read that correctly. Not that it's big deal but with a trip on the horizon I don't want to make a mistake and delay the processing. Also it says there is fee for Express mail (which I would like to use.) If anyone has used this I was wondering if they issed a seperate check or added that amount in to the fee.

Thanks for any information

Go to the closest USPS and schedule an appointment or if they accept walk-ins. Or after oath-taking, there should be a kiosk within grounds where you could apply for the new USC passport (at least in Los Angeles)

I've used normal processing of 4-6 weeks as I didn't need to be expedited.

Good luck!

Thanks but it's this fee I was referring to:

Passport Book Overnight Delivery

(Applicants in the U.S. only)$12.85

  • We strongly suggest that you use overnight delivery service to return your newly issued Passport Book to you. Overnight delivery service is not available for passport cards, which are delivered via First Class Mail only.
  • To request Overnight Delivery, pay the $12.85 Overnight Delivery fee for each application, in addition to the required fees noted above.
  • Please do not submit any prepaid return mailing envelopes or mailing stamps. Newly issued Passport Books are delivered via Priority Mail with Delivery Confirmation, unless you pay for overnight delivery return service at time of application. Overnight delivery service is not available for passport cards, which are delivered via First Class Mail only.

Even we have two DOS agents in town that is barely on the map, one at the post office with less than a years experience, the other is the clerk of court that has been doing that for over twenty years. Choose her, more privacy and no lines. Stepdaughter elected to get hers at her university where they crank out passports like crazy for students studying overseas, still charge that 25 buck fee, know that, because I had to write out the check. But she told me her agent knew what they were doing.

With over 9,000 DOS agents in the USA, bound to find somebody, just get on their site to use that zip code locater, and no law where you have to get that done in your home town.

Thanks Nick, I'm thinking I went to the county courthouse for my PP rather than the PO that is listed on the website...shorter line and more privacy (great idea  )

Ok so here is the deal, you don't have to go in person to the Regional passport agency in your State to apply for your passport. You do that only if you need it in less than 2 weeks from your travel date.

You just go to an Acceptance Facility in your city (like a post office which does it) and bring them the filled out application, certificate, photos, etc.

You pay $25 to the Acceptance Facility (in whatever from of payment they accept), that's what they charge for their "work"

The $110 for the passport you pay by check to the department of state. The normal processing times are 4-6 weeks, as stated on their website.

If you want it faster, within 2-3 weeks, you pay the $60 extra, also to the department of state (so it's then $170 total to the Department of State)

The $12.85 is just the postage you pay for shipping to USPS, one way overnight, so its gets there fast. You can also pay another $12.85 postage fee so the passport gets returned to you overnight as well - faster then normal.....It's up to you if you want to pay that overnight rate or not...you can also send it cheaper, regular mail, but that will take a few days longer, each way...and since you want it fast, they RECOMMEND to use the overnight option.
