I did that. I had a flight on Tuesday, and went to Philadelphia Passport agency on Friday. I made an appointment by phone for 8:30. Got there around 8:45am and had my passport at 12pm. All you need is your Naturalization Cert, Flight information (they just need to see the date on it-must be within 2 weeks), passport photo and money. As I was there there were people who had no appointment but still were able to get their passports. Having an appointment gives you a piece of mind though. It was fast and totally worth that extra 60$.

we made appointment by phone for early morning because in most cases if you have appointment for afternoon you have to wait until the next day to get your passport......we received our passports that afternoon.......just make sure you have print out of your fight information from the travel agent or where ever you purchased your tickets, photos for passport, and proof of who you are and proof of being USA citizen.

A couple of years back my cousin needed a passport for the same day and he got an appointment in the morning in Miami; definitely recommend in the morning, because it could take a while(3-5 hours). If you can go back the next day then it wont be a problem going in the afternoon.
