Hello all,

I just had a question about doing all of the AOS paperwork and part of that is proof of past marriage ending, so what do they ask for, a divorce document in this case?

What if the divorce took place in a foreign country, in that foreign language? What does USCIS require? Does a copy of that foreign divorce document have to be certified/notarized in any way? What about translation, what are the rules in terms of getting the translation for the divorce doc?

you need divorce decree etc, they dont care about who gets the dog etc. it must be in english, so it will need to be translated , you can either do it yourself or have it done.

Thanks much for the reply. So the divorce document (decree) in the foreign langauage has no specific requirements, like court certified etc..? As long as it is translated in English, correct? When papers are submitted, just don't want to have to deal with delays if USCIS send back asking for more specific info etc...want to make sure to get it right the first time...

Hello, I am new here and this is my forst post. Just read your post and my advice is, please get divorce decree that is not only translated, but it also must be with Apostille stamp. All legal documents used in another country (outside the country which it was issued) must have Apostille to be valid. I just applied online and got mine done and posted to me from UK. It is not cheap, but I did it just in case it may be needed. There online services for Apostille stamps, just google it. It must be done in your home country. Good luck!

USCIS does not require foreign documents to be apostilled, only translated if they are in any language other than English.

Thank you Hypnos, I simply followed the advice my lawyer gave me...... He told me that I must Apostille my divorce decree...

The thing is, when people (lawyers particularly) make a mistake over a simple thing like that, it makes me wonder about the bigger things that they have advised me on.

I have the same reaction when I see a typo on a news story or similar; if they didn't take the time to find and correct that, then what other mistakes have they made that are not as apparent?

Just my 2c.
