So we should get the e-Notification before they even attempt to cash the check? Meaning they probably won't attempt to cash it until the earliest of Tuesday? So we should be okay as long as we get the money in the account tonight/tomorrow?

Not sure if anyone can say with certainty, but if you look in my timeline below, you'll see how it went for me last week. I sent a personal check.

Yeah, hopefully we'll be okay. Plus if they definitely do try to cash it two more times, I assume some time apart, then the money will definitely be in there. It's just I've heard of people just having theirs sent straight back for insufficient funds.

6. What is the step-by-step intake process that occurs once a petition is received at a Lockbox Facility?

The Lockbox Service provider performs the following activities when processing incoming applications:

  • Receive, open, sort and stage mail.
  • Prepare and scan documents.
  • Enter document data in system from scanned images.
  • Accept or reject applications and related fees based on business rules.
  • Balance applications and fees.
  • Deposit payments to the U.S. Treasury
  • Send receipt notices for accepted applications to the applicant and designated representative.
  • Return rejected applications to the applicant or designated representative.
  • Transmit application data to USCIS and payment data to U.S. Department of Treasury.
  • Send application files to the appropriate USCIS service center or field office for further processing.

In addition, USCIS-staffed Case Resolution Units adjudicate fee waiver requests and resolve issues with application packages so they can be accepted and sent to a USCIS office for further processing.

Looks like it all sorta happens all at one time.

Last time we sent something to a lockbox, we got the email before the check cleared.

Similar situation happened to me when I filed the I-129F. We filled out all the paperwork when I was in England for a month last summer and I mailed the petition as soon as I got back to the States. A month overseas nearly drained my bank account. I had no idea that the NOA1 would come so quickly. Seeing that this could be a problem, I immediately called my bank. Since I had no history of overdrafts and my paycheck is direct deposited monthly, the bank cleared the check. You just need to be proactive; doing nothing is a mistake.

Lesson learned: now that our paperwork is at the Embassy, we are being very tight with our money in case unexpected expenses arise.

I don't think you are going to have a problem. Today is a federal holiday, so banks and government offices are closed.

Best of luck!

Ok, with it being Sunday the day of delivery and today being a federal holiday so those employees are off today. They won't try to process the check till tomorrow at the earliest and most likely not till Wednesday or Thursday converting the check into an EFT payment.

If you had $ deposited yesterday, you will be fine.

USPS says they delivered on the 17th which is odd as it's a Sunday. You don't say when you made the money transfer to Paypal but they're slow as snails with these types transactions yet lightening fast when they're taking your money. But that's another rant. They have a transfer system called "MoneyPak" that you can use and the money is available instantly. There is a fee for this but I don't know how much it is. If your other option doesn't work out I'd utilize the MoneyPak feature to cover the possible return of your petition. Good Luck!

Yeah, we're fine with the cost itself. The amount wasn't the issue, we just didn't account for Paypal having a 3-5 business day wait on transferring funds to bank accounts, but as someone else said, totally different rant.

I filed earlier this month and the post office delivered my forms on February 6th (Wednesday) at about 11:30 am. They cashed my check February 11th (Monday) First thing. I received my email notification a few hours after that.

If they received your package on the weekend and with Monday being a holiday, they likely won't even see your package until tuesday, so it could be easily as late as Thursday before your check is put through. If you currently have the money in the account then you should be fine

Do you have online banking? If the amount hasn't been deducted from your account yet and you make your deposit (via the borrowed funds from a friend) you'll be fine. That is to say: even when they convert it to an EFT most likely your bank won't reject until their deposit cut-off time for the day. So they will show a negative amount in your balance and if you don't make that deposit before the business day cut-off they will then return it because of insufficient funds.

Oh? I didn't know that, so if that happens it just gives us until that cut off time to put the funds in or else it gets denied? Well, that's less worrying, means we can monitor it for when they try to cash it. Cheers.

That is typically how it works. It's not the same as a debit card. However if it were me I would make a B-line for the bank and make a deposit even if I had to put it in the night deposit to make absolutely certain.
