I did some googling on this myself and it turns out, no.

But your best sources of information are the websites of your local mexican and canadian consulate. I believe the canadian consulate will redirect you to the main canada immigration site where the information you seek is buried deep down somewhere. But it's there, don't take my word for it. Do some digging, you will feel better if you read it for yourself.

Here are the URLs you need with the relevant excerpts:

Permanent Residents of the United States of America, and of Canada

A foreigner of any country, who is a permanent resident of the United States of America or of Canada, may travel to Mexico without a visa or a consular stamp on the passport. The person should travel with the valid passport and the valid US Resident Alien Card (Green Card) or Permanent Resident Card (Canada). If you do not have a valid Resident Alien Card or Permanent Resident Card, you may travel to Mexico if your passport bears a valid stamp from the US immigration authorities (US Citizenship and Immigration Services), or from Canada (Immigration Canada), indicating you are a Permanent Resident. A card will be issued to you on boarding the plane or at the port of entry.

VISITOR VISA EXEMPTIONS

Many people do not require a visa to visit Canada. These include:

* persons lawfully admitted to the United States for permanent residence who are in possession of their alien registration card (Green card) or can provide other evidence of permanent residence.

Thanks, Agent Smith. I have some friends in Canada that I may want to visit once I get the GC.

Do you -- or anyone else -- know (off the top of your head) if Canadian LPRs need a visa to visit the US?

09-02-2005 Applications for AOS, EAD, and AP received by MSC

10-21-2005 AOS fingerprint notice for 12-08-2005

11-07-2005 AP approved

12-05-2005 Infopass appt at San Jose office for interim EAD -- Refused, because it is already approved by MSC on 11-07-2005

12-07-2005 Attempt at interim EAD at San Francisco office -- no go. Back to San Jose, where CSO (chief station officer) tells they will contact MSC via email to request permission to issue interim EAD

12-08-2005 Biometrics for AOS and EAD. Having no EAD appt letter was no problem (used EAD NOA)

12-15-2005 EAD arrived in the mail

12-24-2005 Received interview letter; interview scheduled 03-01-2006

01-28-2006 Received replacement SSN card in married name (5 wks since application)

03-01-2006 AOS interview -- approved; received stamp in the passport

03-13-2006 Green card arrived in the mail

I'm Canadian and have a green card. I've travelled to Canada twice so far using my green card and passport...no visa required.

Yeah but aren't you a Canadian citizen?

I assume the OP's question was in regards to citizens of countries other than the US or Canada, who had LPR status in the US.

If their country of citizenship is not VWP then yes, they will require a visa to visit the US. However, it's pretty easy to get.

Thanks for the clarification, Ziggy. My friends are perm residents in Canada, Russian citizens, so I guess they would need a visa.

I'm Canadian and one of my best friends is an LPR in Canada (UK citizen). In most of the times we came through the POE she didn't need any other documents than her UK passport and Cdn. driver's license. However, the last 2 times in 2004 she had some issues because of new rules...and had to have her Cdn. LPR paperwork on her. I believe she now has a Cdn. passport (or some other formal documentation).

I honestly don't remember if she received an I-94 going through. I do know there was no other 'visa' required.

Hope that helps!

My friends are Russian citizens, so waiving through does not apply to them. Russia will be part of the VW program when hell freezes over, I expect.

Well, thanks for the answer. I thought I read so somewhere in visajourney.com earlier, but I wasn't sure. My husband is going to be relieved that finally we can travel to Mexico and Canada without the paperwork.

Depending on where they are from, yes. My husband was a LPR in CND. He was required his B2/B1 visa to enter the US. He had an Egyptian passport though. I am sure it depends on the passport they hold.
