Somehow it feels wrong to kill him, even considering all the atrocities he's committed.

I agree.... it feels wrong. I'd rather have him spend his life in jail or doing some kind of community service.... anything. I don't know, it's done now.

I agree, life in prison. Murder is murder. I wonder when GWB will go on trial and how many will be cheering when he is sentenced to death.

That's an interesting way to look at the situation, Cristy...

While I feel that executing someone should be reserved for only the very worst of crimes, Saddam Hussein clearly fits that bill. The numer of atrocities he has committed within his lifetime is astounding. If anyone, during our modern era, deserved the death penalty, it would be Hussein for his crimes.

Killing someone is NOT necessarily murder. In fact, murder is defined as the unlawful pre-meditated killing of another human being. That's why in the United States, there's First and Second Degree Murder, and Manslaughter charges, all of which vary in degree of severity, and punishment. Furthermore, killing another individual out on the battlefield is not considered murder nor is killing another in self-defense (although the latter varies from state to state). Finally, executing someone is not considered murder because it is thought of, by the criminal justice system, as a means to punish an individual, and remove an undesirable element from society permanently.

Now, many have arguments against the death penalty. Some are valid; some are merely rhetoric. I'd be interested in hearing what your complaints are with capital punishment, Cristy.

As for President George W. Bush facing execution, I wouldn't hold your breath. He's never murdered anyone. The worst offense he has committed is a DUI when he was younger, which in the U.S. is a misdemeanor. That's punishable by up to one year in jail, and/or perhaps a fine. Regardless, he has never committed a felony, and certainly not one heinous enough to warrant capital punishment.

For those of you who despise Bush, rest assured, each day is plenty difficult for him. Being the President of the United States is one of the toughest jobs in the world, and the stress has not only turned his hair gray, but it's probably reduced his lifespan as well. Ultimately, history will be the judge of Bush, Hussein, the Iraq War, and everything happening today. In a century or two from now, people may have vastly different views, and perhaps even see Bush as we see Lincoln -- a great man and an even better president. It sounds somewhat far-fetched at the present, but if you were to tell the average citizen (north or south) in the 1860's that Abraham Lincoln would be one of America's most beloved presidents, they would've said you were crazy and that they hate him. So, things do change with time. ;)

I just don't believe in an eye for an eye. It is just not who I am. I can't justify killing someone no matter what the reason.

And before you ask....yes I would feel this way even if the person had killed someone I love.

Not directly (although he executed enough people as governor of Texas) but he is definitely

responsible for the deaths of tens of thousands of Iraqis.

Has Saddam ever murdered anyone himself? Perhaps he has, I just don't know.

Whether or not the state of Texas executes anyone convicted of capital murder does not make the governor of Texas an executioner. And it is probably Bush's fault that there were floods in the state while he was in office. Not to mention automobile accidents in which there were fatalities. It's all his fault.

And Harry Truman is 100% at fault for nuking Japan (and killing thousands). Is there such a thing as cause and effect?

Bush is responsible for Iraqi deaths, but we're not sure if Saddam is a murderer? And are Kerry, Hillary, and company responsible as well for voting funds to proscecute the war in Iraq? And I for paying my Federal taxes which are used to prescecute this war?

I think it is way off base to compare Bush to Saddam.

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

bush didn't execute anyone, that was the court system doing that. you make it sound like bush either pulled the switch or was the judge sentencing the convict.

also, somewhere i've read that saddam first killed someone when he was about 14.

Well there ya go -- that's not the same as being indirectly responsible for people's deaths

(which both Saddam and Bush are, as well as Blair and probably any other head of state.)
