I am leaving in a few hours to go to Japan and spend time with my fiancee's family and then we will fly back together. It is so amazing that this is finally happening!!! When I am going through immigration in Japan, should I tell them that I am there to pick up my fiancee or just avoid the subject altogether?

Thanks

GatorFan96,

As you know, a US citizen can visit Japan without a visa. Why not just say you are visiting Japan, which is true to some extent.

Providing too much information at immigration checkpoints is never a good idea. Have a great reunion.

On my last trip to the Philippines I stated that I was going to get married. I swear that I was put through more scrutiny than any of my previous trips, though it may be just because of the recent terrorist arrests in Europe. Still, I think the advice to not give too much info is good. Perhaps state that you are visiting friends. That seems harmless and truthful.

The less said the better, even in Japan. I once got extra scrutinized flying into Tokyo because I made the mistake of saying I was there to see my girlfriend. Maybe the officer didn't like gaijin seeing nihonjin girls?
