First there was Jeff Gannon, the gay prostitute and faux journo mysteriously given passes to White house press conferences. Then there was Mark Foley. But that one's fresh in your mind.

The latest from Josh Marshall: "It turns out that the Republican National Committee is a regular recipient of political contributions from Nicholas T. Boyias, the owner and CEO of Marina Pacific Distributors, one of the largest producers and distributors of gay porn in the United States."

The hypocrisy is frighteningly standard. The GOP's in a bind. They need cultural conservative votes in order to win, yet they don't give a flying f**k about their values, beliefs, or needs. As far as whom they take money from or what kind of lives their operatives and candidates lead, well, those are clearly of little to no concern.

Which is also why leaders like James Dobson, Tony Perkins and others are in danger of damaging their reputations, but good. Forced to shut their eyes to parts of the Republican Party they don't agree with, they wind up making deals that compromise their ethics and values. When their followers get wise to the reality of politics, as they eventually will, it'll take a herculean effort to patch things up. (TPM)

it's interesting to me how the liberal left--you know...that party that stands for "tolerance" and gay rights?--is salivating all over this. their mock-indignance over a few outed republicans is really humorous.

talk about your hypocracy!

why is it so interesting? If the left is considered amoralistic due to these stances (pro-gay marriage, etc) then why shouldn't people hold the *supposed* moralistic right to the standard they are spouting?? I would call that hypocrisy as well.

no, no, no...don't misunderstand me.

i think that the actions of Foley (and company) are reprehensible.

what i find humorous is the fact that the left is making a big deal of it. if they are really so "tolerant"...then a person's sexual orientation should be a non-issue.

lol its not his sexual orientation that is the problem for the lefties imo... it's the hypocrisy that he stands for the supposed moral high ground and does this kind of thing, therefore is IS an issue. Would you like the lefties to all bow and say - good job? What do you want them to be tolerant of? They fact that he had a sexual relationship with a MINOR?? Stating lefties should show tolerance just because he may be gay is silly because its reprehensible no matter WHO you are.

But again back to the supposed moralistic values of the right - he is supposed to represent that, therefore in this case it not only matters that he had sexual relations with a minor, but that he is a MORAL RIGHTIE! He broke the law! and other republicans KNEW about it

The Republican Party has boasted for so long (around 1994) that they are the Party of Family Values, while the Democratic Party has been painted as wallowing in 'moral relativism', the 'anything goes' Party with their support for gay rights. So the hypocracy here is showing what a load of bunk those labels have been. Congratulations to the Republican Party for effectiveley harnassing in the Christian Evangelists' votes by scaring them over single issues such as gay rights, but that honeymoon is over. They're abandoning the GOP in droves and for good reason. Regardless of what Party you belong to - when one thumps its chest and boldly claims they stand for Family Values, the voting public should call them on it.

i dunno.

gay rights are certainly not a GOP platform issue, just because of a few bad apples. the GOP *does* still stand for family values. when this came out, what did foley do? he RESIGNED immediately. his actions were condemned by the party. did a few of his friends cover for him? yes. and by the way, those friends were on both sides of the aisle.

let's just take a look at the different reaction in the democratic party. when it came out that bill clinton had been commiting adultery...and remember, he was being investigated for charges of sexual harassment and basically, attempted rape...did he resign? NO. did he even admit that he was wrong? NO. instead, he quibbled on the definition of the word "is", and blatantly purgered himself by lying about the nature of his relationship with monica lewinsky. where was the democratic outrage then?? where were those folks who'd been screaming about women's rights just a few years earlier during the clarence thomas hearings?? instead of taking the high ground, the democrats circled their wagons around their rock-star and were indignant that anyone would question the "private" sex life of a political leader.

oh, and by the way...from what i understand...that boy was 18 years old when foley sent him those illicit messages. still gross...but technically legal.

do you think they are salivating because they don't tolerate gay people or because it exposes Republican hypocrisy on issues related to gay rights?

since steve's link doesn't work I did a google -- it seems to be true, though perhaps the amounts might be a bit paltry

also, hitting on pages or kids...is just wrong to most americans...

Dani,

Both parties have blemished pasts and have demonstrated that winning sometimes takes precedent over principals. What I don't think though is accurate is to say the GOP stands any more for Family Values than the Democratic Party does...that's just empty rhetoric which is what this OP was all about. If you believe their position on things such as Stem Cell research and abortion are more in line with your values then great, but family values is a 'feel good', ambiguous term that can mean all kinds of things - like the Family Medical Leave Act - something the Dems supported and the Republicans rejected. So who has the moral authority to decide which party is the party of Family Values? IMO...stating that one is moreso than the other is nothing but meaningless rhetoric.
