Florida Drivers License

Hey guys,

So I just returned from the DMV here in Miami to obtain my Florida drivers license and thought i'd let you guys know the process (3.5 hours of it) that they gave me.

My AOS is currently pending with CSC, however, i received my EAD last week which entitles me to a 1 year license (duration of the EAD).

So i brought with me to the DMV:

1) My EAD card

2) Social Security card

3) Two proofs of Address (a bank statement, and my i797 for my AOS)

These were essential and a couple of people got turned away for not having enough documentation, and you wouldn't want to have to come back, there was a line out the door just to get into the place!

The DMV website did not show that i need to bring my foreign drivers license (Australia) just the 3 things mentioned above. But once i got there, they asked me if i had a foreign drivers license and then to see it and scanned

it with my other documents and gave it back to me, they did not cut it or punch a hole in it to void it, so technically i can still use it.

They did not need my passport or anything like that.

I did however have to take BOTH tests (driving + written) the written test i could understand, but the driving test left me feeling a little insulted as i have had an unrestricted license in Australia for the past 10 years!

And they didn't even take me out of the parking lot of the mall that the DMV was in lol

But I swallowed my pride and took the tests which were scarily easy, (No wonder there is so many crazy drivers in Miami, they give a license to anyone lol!) 48 dollars and 3.5 hours of waiting and going from this person to that

person, outside, back in and round the world once i was issued with a temporary Florida drivers permit while they scanned and sent all my documentation to Tallahassee for verification who will then send me my proper FL

license soon i hope!

Hope this has provided some insight to any other AOS waiters hoping to get the driver's license soon. Also happy to answer any questions about the experience!

Congrats!

I just came back from my driving test too, and passed it. In California, it's quite similar: $31, written+driving test even if you have a DL from another country, and for sure, lots of waiting at the DMV office (less if you have an appointment). They told me I should receive it in a month.

Just thought I would add to this to keep it relevant and in case anyone else is going for theirs soon or would simply like to know.

I sat my behind the wheel test today in Orlando, FL, and received my Drivers License card immediately. I had previously sat the written test while waiting on my EAD/AOS paperwork to come through as the amount of time left on my I-94 would have made getting a Drivers License pointless as the processing time would have taken longer than the amount of time left on the I-94.

I brought:

  • my EAD card
  • Social Security
  • proof of address
  • proof of insurance on the car
  • the vehicle registration
  • and my New Zealand Drivers License

The lady behind the desk had said to me that I would receive my Drivers License card today only because I had my EAD card in hand, otherwise it would have had to have gone to Tallahassee for processing before being delivered.

The fee was just over $52 and as the OP said, the test was all in the parking lot as well.
