US makes Vegemite an illegal substance

By 7News

Australians could be searched for Vegemite when they enter the US, after the spread was classified as illegal under US food laws.

The Aussie staple contains folate, which can only be added to breads and cereals, according to News Ltd newspapers.

Kraft spokeswoman Joanna Scott told the Sunday Times: "The (US) Food and Drug Administration does not allow the import of Vegemite, simply because the recipe does have the addition of folic acid.''

Vegemite, invented in 1923, is popular in Australia and New Zealand.

It came to the attention of many Americans through the lyrics of Men At Work's 1982 song "Down Under", which mention "a vegemite sandwich".

Without getting into too many details... there are plenty of ethnic food items that are technically illegal in this country but openly sold if you know where to look and what to ask for. The government knows but looks the other way. I wouldn't sweat it. All this means is you won't find it on a counter anywhere but will have to have it mailed or you'll have to ask for it by name at the counter of your local aussie foods store (is there such a thing? lol)...

Man is made by his belief. As he believes, so he is.
