....where non whites were served first?

I think these 2 changes are not only more inclusive, but they make up for the past.

What a publicity stunt..It's people like that who ruin it for black Americans.. Yes the whole organization is to blame because wait staff did not serve them in time..

First of all most Cracker Barrels I have been to have a mix of black and white people working in them..

And not only that...

But the service is always good, no matter what color people are!

(or if you have a table with 12 hispanics that want to order, cant make up their minds and only one person speaks english!)

Does anyone here remember the restaurant chain, Sambo's?

I loved going there for pancakes as a kid and seeing the illustrations of Sambo and the tigers. In my opinion, I really don't see any problem with the name of the restaurant or the illustrations based on a children's story.

.....

SANTA BARBARA, California (CNN) -- Once upon a time there was a man named Sam Battistone. Sam had a friend named Newell Bohnett, whom everyone called Bo.

In 1957, the two men decided to open a restaurant. They figured they'd serve sizzling hotcakes, offer coffee for 10 cents a cup and give their customers service with a smile.

They called the restaurant Sambo's.

Fast-forward 41 years. Sam Battistone's grandson, Chad Stevens, has plans to rebuild the restaurant chain -- which once numbered 1,200 units coast-to-coast -- to its former glory.

There's just one problem: the name.

Sambo's was an amalgam of Sam and Bo, and as part of their marketing strategy the founders used a logo based on a children's story called "Little Black Sambo."

The book was written in 1899 by Helen Bannerman, a Scottish woman, and takes place in India. It is about a little boy who goes into the jungle and loses his clothing to bullying tigers. But the tigers chase each other around a tree and eventually melt into butter, which Sambo puts on his pancakes and eats.

The marketing strategy was obvious: Sam and Bo open Sambo's, and pancakes were one of the restaurant's specialties.

Original Sambo looked African

restaurant.sambo.jpg

Sambo as depicted by the restaurant

The original Sambo's restaurant used as its logo a depiction of an Indian boy, but in the book -- and in the minds of many who read it -- Sambo looked more African than Indian.

Eventually the chain failed and the reason given was that it expanded too fast. But Stevens nurtures visions of putting his grandfather's empire back together.

Only one of the original restaurants survived, the first one in Santa Barbara.

"This store hasn't changed at all," says Stevens. "We've done a little bit of facelift on it but, for the most part, the kitchen's the same."

Stevens not only wants to rebuild the Sambo's empire, he also wants to keep the name. And the name, which took on negative connotations in the 1930s and 1940s, is generating opposition.

"The cultural understanding of 'Little Black Sambo' is a negative," says Professor Frank Gilliam of UCLA. "It's meant to suggest that people of African descent are childlike, that they're irresponsible, that they're not fully developed human beings."

Carol Codrington of Loyola Law School said the character was used to stereotype African Americans as shiftless and lazy.

Book reissued under new title

Stevens protests that the restaurant is based on a family name, not racism.

"I have a hard time," he says, "and maybe being white or Anglo-Saxon, maybe I'm not seeing something. Maybe I'm blind to something. I'm sorry about that. Just read the story, and you tell me."

While it is no doubt still possible to find copies of Bannerman's original story, which has charmed generations, publishers decided to avoid the negative connotations by reissuing the book with a new title: "The Story of Little Babaji."

The boy, his mother and father are given authentic Indian names -- Babaji, Mamaji, Dadaji -- and the illustrations are emphatically Indian.

Stevens says this is the 1990s. He just wants to sell good food and coffee, and he hopes that when it comes to Sambo's, this won't be the end.

I never actually had breakfast there but I do remember its commercials (beamed to us in Calgary from Spokane)--almost always ended with a staffer and someone dressed in tiger (actually quite reminiscent of Tigger) costume singing the slogan.

In 1979 (or early 1980), I saw ads of its opening a branch in (SE quadrant--Southland Dr. between MacLeod Tr. and Bonaventure Dr.) Calgary--classified, asking for applicants. I actually went there and applied--but it went bankrupt shortly after.

As the story indicates, the problem is not with white customers, hence you may may be OK if you are white or a border line minority....Before the DOJ cracked down on them, they used to separate whites and blacks, with blacks sitting at the back of the restaurant, out of view of incoming customers...they settled out of court with the govt instead of being made to pay for it by going through a judicial process, as they would, if the discrimination was against white customers...

The Cracker Barrel Old Country Store® Story

In the late 1960s, Dan Evins worked as a Shell Oil "jobber" in rural Tennessee. Driving from town to town, he would spend hours thinking of new ways to sell gasoline to folks traveling on the highways and interstates. All that time driving helped him understand people needed a place they could trust when they travel. So in 1969, Evins brought his latest idea to life when he and a local contractor scratched their building plans in the dirty on Highway 109 in Lebanon, Tennessee. This dusty blueprint marked the spot of the original Cracker Barrel Old Country Store location.

Evins believed a business for travelers should be convenient and trustworthy. He thought travelers would appreciate making one stop to get gasoline, a good meal, candy for the kids and some rest from the road. To persuade folks to stop, he blended his service station business with the atmosphere of the old country stores he remembered as a child. Those stores were a community's unofficial meeting place where folks gathered around a barrel full of saltine crackers to visit with friends and trade some common sense wisdom.

From our humble beginnings in the hills of Tennessee to a leading restaurant and retail concept nationwide, Cracker Barrel Old Country Store remains true to its mission of pleasing people, both travelers and neighbors alike. From hearty, made from scratch comfort foods to nostalgic gift items, there's no better place to eat, shop and relax.

CRACKER BARREL’S PUBLIC ACCOMMODATION POLICY STATEMENT

It is Cracker Barrel’s policy, fully consistent with federal, state and local law, that no Cracker Barrel employee may discriminate against any Cracker Barrel guest or would-be guest on the basis of race, color, age, national origin, gender, religion, disability, or sexual orientation.

For instance, Cracker Barrel policy prohibits: (1) providing preferential seating based on race or color; (2) seating guests out of order based on race or color; (3) seating guests of a certain race or color in a certain part of the restaurant on the basis of their race or color; (4) refusing to serve guests based on race or color, including trading tables with other servers to avoid serving guests based on race or color; (5) providing slower or less courteous service to guests based on race or color; (6) making any racially offensive comments, including assertions that certain races or groups tip worse than others. This list is for example only and is not exhaustive.

Cracker Barrel’s policy of "Pleasing People" does not include accommodating customer or employee prejudices based on race, or color.

Any Cracker Barrel employee who observes what he or she thinks may be a violation of this policy must report it to a store manager, district manager, regional manager, or to Cracker Barrel’s Home Office (1-800-333-9566). Any employee found to have violated this policy (including failing to report a violation that he or she observed) will be subjected to severe discipline up to and including immediate termination. In addition, any Cracker Barrel employee may report a violation of this policy to the applicable local, state or federal enforcement agencies, including the Civil Rights Division of the United States Department of Justice (1-800-896-7743 or 1-202-514-4713).

Cracker Barrel and its employees cannot and will not reprimand, penalize, or otherwise retaliate in any way against any employee who, in good faith, opposes or reports alleged discrimination, either to Cracker Barrel or to the applicable local, state or federal enforcement agencies. Any employee found to have retaliated against another employee who opposed or reported discrimination will be subjected to severe discipline up to and including immediate termination.

We are discussing their racism and people continuing to patronize them..why would someone support such a place when we are all here trying to talk immigration in our personal lives? In my opinion there should be more widespread efforts to stop bigotry that is allowed to continue by many establishments...today its them being discriminated against, tomorrow it will be you....

It has nothing to do with the source. ABC, CNN and everyone else reported this story. Do a search and see. The point is that they have consistently been doing this. Even teh department of justice was on them few years back..
