Translation of Birth Certificate

I read online that if something needed to be translated, the person only needed to write that the translation is accurate and that they are competent to translate. But, then I called the NVC to confirm this and the woman said no, that it must be from a certified translator. Does anybody have experience with this either way? All of our documents (marriage license, beneficiary's passport, police report) have English as one of the languages already except the birth certificate for the beneficiary. I wrote to get a quote from a place where we are living (outside of the US) and they said about $275 for just translating the birth certificate. Advice??

I'm sure this won't be helpful, but for certified translations I pay about $20/page. $275 seems like a huge freaking ripoff to me and I'd do a little more research if I were you.

For France, you are correct with regard to translation of French documents for USCIS. At the NVC stage, there is no need to translate a birth certificate, police report or any other civil document that is already in French. For some other countries, like China, the NVC operator would be correct. For French documents used for an interview in France, not translation is needed.

It's actually for a French document for an interview in Switzerland. But as German, French and Italian are all national languages here, it should be similar. A colleague of mine did this last year (USC) with his German wife and did not need to translate anything, but that's when everything went through the embassy and not first to the NVC office in the states so I thought perhaps things have changed.

As for the $275, that's because they also claim that it's must be notarized on top of being a certified translation to which I said was BS and requested a quote from another place.

I am in the same dilemna. I get 3 different stories from 3 different places. So i'm gonna go with the certified translation to be safe. As for the price, I cant believe it costs that much even with notarization. They also told us that an international version of our certificates is acceptable.

You can check with the IV unit directly regarding whether French documents need translation.

How do I check with the IV unit directly? Is that the embassy here or an office in the NVC?

This crosses the border to spoon feeding. The interview will be with a Consular Officer that is part of an Immigrant Visa Unit (IV Unit) working out of an Embassy or Consulate. Each has a website with contact information. Do some homework.

I realize that the embassy will be doing the interview, I just thought that if the hold up was that the NVC won't accept the document as is, then it wouldn't have the chance to get forwarded to the embassy for their opinion to matter.

I've done the homework and there are conflicting answers as to what is acceptable.

So, contact the IV unit directly and ask, BEFORE sending anything to NVC.
