Oath and Travel to home country

Does one get the naturalization certificate the same day they take the oath? Is one officially a citizen right after the oath? When does one renounce the citizenship of their home country if their country does not permit dual citizenship?

Why I am asking all these questions is because, I am expecting oath in Sept/Oct and right after that I am planning to travel to India to visit my husband. Do I need to wait to get the US passport, OCI card etc, before I travel? Or can I travel after the oath?

Please help.

One you attend the Oath ceremony you get the Naturalization certificate the same day, and are a Citizen once the oath is taken. You don't have to renounce your citizenship from another country from my understanding. I don't know if it varies by country to country, as I'm a dual Citizen from Colombia and US. You do need your US Passport to Enter the US, took me about two weeks receive mine once I applied for it.

There is expediting service if you need US passport in a hurry ($60 more in application fee plus overnight delivery cost). Usually by using expediting service you will get your passport ~1 week sooner than regular service (2-3 weeks). After the oath, you need to get the US passport before traveling.

You get Citizenship Certificate immediately after oath ceremony before you leave. once you take oath you are american citizen.

but you need to renounce your indian citizenship by submitting indian passport to indian consulate before you travel to india

Thank you all for the replies.

It appears I will be better off if I traveled after the interview and before the oath ceremony. I hear rescheduling interview is not a good idea, as it may delay one's case further. Does rescheduling oath ceremony (in case if it is necessary) also have the same effect? I would've liked to travel before the interview, but can't take off from work till mid-Sept.

From what I've seen you usually get rescheduled at most a full month after you submit your request for oath reschedule, so I don't think it's a big deal. If you're not in a rush to get your oath done it should be pretty relaxed, though who knows they might get stuck somewhere, an infopass or a call usually clears that up. As long as you'd already been approved at the interview and scheduled for your first oath there shouldn't be hiccups. Remember to note on your oath checklist that you left the country since your interview.

do not reschedule interview, you may reschedule oath.

after oath, you need to get american passport and renounce indian citizenship and get indian visa to travel to india, which may take 2-3 month to complete all.
