My husband and I will return to the US soon, and I'm very worried about him finding work there. He's a very good software developer, very skilled and with a lot of experience given his age. My state (not a state, a US territory) has literally no jobs right now... anyone had any luck finding a job to work remotely in this field?

One of the stronger fields. I am sure that he can find something through professional networking. No need to wait until he is stateside.

my company develops software and all of our developers are remote. typically easy to find a programming position working remotely as long as you have the experience :)

If you can easily travel to the clients, to say New York for example, for the initial meeting, it always bodes well. The challenge lies in getting the opportunity more so than maintaining a solid relationship for the clients. That depends on your work. The software dev industry is strong.

We'd definitely travel for interviews and so on if needed, we're just wondering where can he find these remote jobs? I only know of a website called ladders or something... any other ideas? Where I'm from there's literally no job creation right now, just the contrary, that's why we're really looking into remote work.

I would encourage your husband to try https://www.odesk.com/ I currently have several contracts going through this website, so it's actually legit. I have no experience in your husband's field, but I think he could make good money there. I have seen Software Developers working remotely charging as high as $100/hr (makes me wish I was in the IT field :)) It may take some time to land that big contract, but once you do, you won't regret it :no: You can also try www.elance.com

Elance.com is another great site for software developers. Just make sure he has a solid portfolio and/or recommendations to add to those sites.
