For self-employed they go by line 22 of the most recent 1040, which is 2011. He will need to provide a complete copy of his 2011 tax return which includes the 1040, all schedules, attachments and any 1099s. Basically a mirror copy of what he would have mailed to the IRS to file his taxes.
