I live in Maine and work in Canada so I cross the border daily. Two days ago I was searched - after being there for over an hour I was released and left without my greencard. I did not realize it until the next day when I arrived at customs. They cannot find the card at the facility - they apparently lost it but say it is my fault because I left without it...

Now I have to pay $450 to replace when it is somewhere there - they just cant find it.

I feel very abused by these customs officer.

any advice?

I would report it lost/stolen to the police with all the details you can.

Then attempt to apply for a new one with the police report and see if you can waive the fee.

The worst with that would be them denying it for lack of funds then you could just apply again with payment.

Would also take up extra time while you wait to see if they accept it or not.

in the meantime since you will need proof of your PR status to cross the border and return back into the US, make an infopass appointment at your local USCIS office and request that they put an updated I-551 stamp in your passport. The one you got on entry has probably expired. They may require proof that you have applied for a new one. Good luck.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”
