Marriage status will also show on background checks. You could potentially be denied entry even after approval of a visa if they believe you are married.

Further to this, if/when they discover that you were married when you entered on K-1, they can revoke your PR status, deport you, and ban you for life for fraud/misrepresentation. Yep, it has happened. There is a news story floating around here of a Japanese/American couple in this situation.

So it seems a quick wedding soon for the certificate, filing for a spousal visa and then having the celebration next june is the recommended path?

Thanks for clearing this up.

This is what I would do.

Yes, you can do this. Keep in mind the UK requires a visa for the foreign national to marry in the UK.

Would a quick, cheap wedding be okay for the spousal visa application though? A rushed, cheap job doesn't exactly scream 'We're in love!' ha.

Thanks.

Adam

We probably wouldn't even have witnesses we know, to spare people's feelings.

The type of wedding doesn't matter.

I had a "rushed, cheap job" and my marriage is just as valid. :)

I didn't mean to offend evylin, it would literally be eloping. As long as they won't mind, that seems great.

thank you very much for all your help.

Adam

Not offended! Hope everything works out for you :)

Thanks, she is actually over here in the UK on a student visa, valid for another 14 months.

I believe you can get married on this visa as long as you give notice to the appropriate authority.

Ahh, more important information comes out.

Look into DCF (Direct Consular Filing). I am not sure if a student visa will qualify, but it's possible your original plan (with spousal visa not K-1) would work.

Sorry to throw another option into the confusing mix, but the location of your fiance was an important omission :)
