Is being ABOVE the poverty number all that is needed, regardless of how high above?

That is, suppose poverty amount for one person supporting one extra person is $15,000....is any amount from $15,001 - $99,000 sufficient...is that all thats needed as far as income is concerned?

Also, as far as income goes, what number is taken into consideration, gross income or net?

Meeting the minimum guideline income is no assurance the affidavit of support will be deemed sufficient by the Consular Officer at interview. You state the total gross income, actual. For past income from a 1040, it's line 22 or from a 1040EZ, it is the line labeled "Adjusted Gross Income". For current income, it is a calculation of what the sponsor will earn during the next twelve months based on their current gross pay. If you have a "salary" of X, then X is your current income. If you are paid $15 an hour gross and work 40 hours a week, take 15X40X52 and state that as your current income.

No- the minimum income is the absolute minimum. The CO cannot approve you if you are even a few dollars below. Above that, they can use their discretion- for example if you are on a temp contract, have irregular income due to self-employment, are using a co-sponsor or sponsoring on assets, they often want you to be comfortably above.

Suppose my mother sponsors my wife and she and I plan on living with her when we arrive. When looking at the chart and deciding my mothers income requirement, would household size be THREE (including me)...or TWO (just my mother and my wife).

That is, can we leave me out of this completely and simply make this an issue of my wife being sponsored by my mother and living with her?

Its these gray areas that get so finicky and confusing for me.

You are always the primary sponsor whether you qualify or not. Yes, your mother can act as the only joint sponsor by providing an I-864 of her own. You are not part of her household unless she claims you as a dependent on her tax return.
