Rescheduling GC Interview Date?

Hi all. My wife and I are currently in the post I-485/AOS period (i.e. we got married, submitted materials for the green card, and are waiting to hear on an interview date).

My question is this: we submitted the GC application way back in December, but haven't gotten any word yet on an actual date for the GC interview. My guess is that it could be anytime within the next few months. My conundrum is that I have a lot of business travel coming up that I need to schedule (important work related trips I simply cannot reschedule), and also my wife and I are planning on some personal travel as well. My worry is if we buy plane tickets and then find out the next day that a GC interview is scheduled for the period in which we or I are traveling. Is it easy to re-schedule a GC interview? Has anyone done that before? Thanks in advance.

First question; have you gotten a letter saying the petition has been transferred to California Service center?

I'm a December filer too, btw. You can check your case status online, just type in your AOS receipt number on http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis (on the left side).

K1 process, October 2010 > POE, July 2011

I-129F approved in 180 days from NOA1 date. (195 days from filing to NOA2 in hand)

Interview took 224 days from I-129F NOA1 date. (241 days from filing petition until visa in hand)

From filing I-129F petition until POE: 285 days

AOS process, December 2011 > July 2012

EAD/AP Approval took 51 days from NOA1 date to email update. (77 days from filing until EAD/AP in hand)

Hi Moomin, at the USCIS website the status for our I-485 application is "initial review".

And yes, the application was transferred to the CA Service Ctr. Is that good or bad?

It's not that easy to reschedule. The reason is because when you reschedule, there have been cases where USCIS says they got your request but they don't forward it to your local field office. So then your local field office is still expecting you, you don't show up, you get denied. While you would be able to re-openg your case, if you are abroad when that happens your AP would be cancelled and you would not be able to return (if you are abroad).

So if you must reschedule you need to do a lot of following up with your local office, etc. Also keep in mind you can't pick a new date so it could end up when you are traveling again.

This isnt unusual in my experiance. Check to make sure your wifes name is in your mail box so the info isnt returned.

Have you done the bio metrics?

If the interview happened to fall when you couldnt attend you have no choice other than to reschedual. It is easy to reschedual but you may have to wait some time to be interviewed.

To obtain the best info possible make an Info Pass appointment on line to sit down with USCIS. That office can tell you what is required to reschedual which happens at times of course.

It usually means you won't have an interview when it's transferred to CSC. I think they're processing November filers now(judging from the recent approvals on VJ). You may still get an RFE at any stage so if you go overseas now you'll have no way of responding to it.

Hi Ning, yes, she did the biometrics way back in February, which made me think we were on the fast track to the GC interview. But since then, we haven't heard anything yet. Hopefully, soon!

Thanks Moomin. I hope you are right. After your first message, I recalled that the CSC is a good development for precisely that reason (no interview). I hope you are right and we get the GC in the mail soon! Hope the same for you as well. ;)

Precisely. They claim it's faster processing at CSC however.. "faster" means slower. :) It may still be sent to a local office and have an interview after all but I have only seen a few cases of that happening.

Thankya : ) And likewise. I'm not in a hurry - I won't apply for citizenship down the road anyway so as long as I can live somewhat of a normal life with my husband while awaiting greencard/decision, I'm glad.
