I am trying to find out if my mother-in-law's tourist visa will automatically be extended to 10 years or will this extension only apply to newly issued tourist visa. My mother-in-laws expires in Sept 2012. To re-new is never easy even if you obeyed all the conditions of your visa. If you have the answer, please let me know.

It's only for new visas. People with existing visas will have to go back to the US Embassy to renew them as soon as they expire.

Three months ago today I arrived in Medellin on a flight from New York. I was fortunate enough to get the customs agent who likes giving foreigners a hard time. Instead of receiving a 60 visa like most tourists, I received a 30 day visa. I have now been back to the immigration office three times to get my visa extended.

She needs to go back with the same type of evidence she brought with her the day her current visa was approved just in case. I've heard that most people get approved again but I've also heard of a few denials, so be ready for anything.
