AZ college students protest campus smoke ban

SCOTTSDALE, AZ (AP) - Students handed out free cigarettes at Scottsdale Community College in a protest against lighting up on campus. Organizers said Wednesday every student should have the choice to pick their own lifestyle.

Starting July 1, no tobacco products will be allowed on any of the 10 Maricopa Community Colleges campuses, which include satellite sites around the Phoenix-area, as well as two skills centers and district office in Tempe. The ban is part of the Maricopa BreathEasy initiative announced last fall.

The Arizona Republic reports violations and enforcement of the policy are still being worked out, but district officials say it's likely warnings will be issued for first-time offenders.

The district is joining about 500 other universities and colleges across the U.S. that have implemented similar policies.
