If my shoes were caked in mud then of course i would take my shoes off  other than that my feet get cold very quickly and if i didnt have slippers then no i wouldnt take em off

I wasn't accustomed to taking my shoes off, but my husband is. When we are at his parent's or grandparent's homes we take them off. Here at home we take them off. It's comfortable without shoes, for one thing. Another, you can keep the dirt and crud at a minimum by doing this. For me, an asthmatic, the more crud and dirt left outside is better.

For us, it's not a cultural or any other kind of thing...just personal preference. If I come to your home and you prefer we keep our shoes on, then we would do so. At our house, I won't tell you to take your shoes off but I would hope you would have respect for my asthamtic condition to do it. :)

I too have asthma and ive yet to find a common link between keepin my shoes on and havin an asthma attack, i'm ten times more likely to have one if my windows arent open whether it be spring/summer/autumn and winter..more so winter..my windows are open 365 days of the year, only thing ive noticed that triggers it is fog (for ppl in U.S and canada thats mist lol). I like my rooms aired 24/7 anyways, but when its foggy outside i tend to stay put indoors, fog is the main trigger that sets an attack off for me.

If i went into someone else's home then yes i would definately take off my shoes, its common curtousity after all, if my shoes are clean especially when am in my own house then i tend to keep them on coz no doubt at some point i'll need to put them back on again

Then maybe I should let you talk to the two specialists I've seen. This is only part of the information I've received from them regarding my asthma. Plus, you have to realize that not everyone's asthma is the same as someone else's. Mine just landed me in the hospital for a frickin week! For me, it IS an issue.

At our house, I won't tell you to take your shoes off but I would hope you would have respect for my asthamtic condition to do it. :)

So, KC, if it's such an issue, why wouldn't you insist your visitors take off their shoes? As we all have seen here, there are lots of different perspectives on 'shoes on or off', so to take it as a sign of disrespect when it actually may be the exact opposite...especially not insisting since it causes you severe health problems, just seems strange. Why would you suffer if you didn't have to?

And another thing....why is everyone buying beige carpet?!?!? come on now!

  • 2 years later...

I always take mine off, cultural thing. Why would anyone want to walk in their shoes at home? Think about the last public restroom you used, the one at work... do you really wanna spread those germs around your home?

I expect my guest to take their shoes off as well, but most are inconsiderate americans :)

When I go to someone's house, I always take mine off even when they insist that I don't. Unless they have pets, then I will keep my shoes on, do not want to step on any gross pet hair and pet saliva covered floors
