I know the laws are very strict on what an American can carry.

Do you think a box opener would be ok?

aka razor knife, like to open boxes?

You mean like a defensive weapon? Even if you win, you lose. There are more Filipinos that you, they don't like to lose, and don't fight fair. Second, Filipino prisons are dark overcrowded holes, and a Kano like you wouldn't survive the night. Best thing is to avoid such places, watch what you say (they take insults seriously), avoid competition (they don't like to lose, and they don't play fair), and trust your wife/fiancee to keep you out of trouble. Don't wander off on your own. Don't get caught alone.

it has to be in your checked luggage, but why take it ?

Cuz it really cool and I carry at my side clipped to my pants pocket from 8 to 5 and it's very useful. I am taking it in my checked luggage and give some away as gifts. Last time in Cebu they took my duct tape in my carry on bag and confiscated it.

Plus I am like a boy scout always be prepared and know your surroundings...

Yes good advice, I am aware of the rule of engaging with a filipino, If you start something there is another guy with a knife coming at you.

I like to wander off, I purchased a motorbike last trip so I can get around much easier. I roam the Philippines and so far have never had a issue, I just heard right now that Davao has a rash or holdup and murders, and Duerte has issued a extra bounty for dealing with these criminals.....

Hmmm... Boy scout or not. The best way to protect yourself in the Philippines is to stay away from trouble cuz I can guarantee you'll realize quickly that you brought a box cutter to a gun fight! Most filipinos just like talking to Americans... Be cool and friendly... They wont mess with you if you don't mess with them.

You are approaching things the wrong way. Bring a box cutter might work in New York City but you will not be in the United States and when you find yourself in jail in the Philippines you'll wish you had listened to everybody else.

Follow everyones advice but let me add if you are stupid enough to get into a bad area and the wrong people cross your path or you harrass the wrong person, you better be smart enough to smile and back out of the situation and appologize and swallow your pride instead of pulling a box cutter because someone will hit you from behind with a board and besides you don't want any trouble over there. You are out of your element.

Do not carry or attempt to fly with any weapon to and from the Phils. You will be stopped at Customs and give an explaination. It will be confiscated. (X-Ray). This is true for Domestic Flights.

If you want to fell like a Bad ####. That is the wrong place to do it. Hank mentioned "Listen to your Fiancee" Yes good advice. I always stayed with Mav in town, held her hand most of the time because your lost: They all have long pretty black hair. Can you Imagine getting lost?

If you are caught in a bar fight or other means of breaking the Law and have a weapon. That is what you don't need.

I felt safer in the Phils than I do in the US. Stay away from bad people. Look behind you just as you would in the US.

And be Cautious about your intake of Red Horse Beer.

Enjoy the Philippines and meet all the good people as I did. Be wary of Goverment Police/Guards, Patrols,Security at Airports.

Even Mc Doos and Jollebee have Armed Guards with Shotguns and you  want a "Box Cutter"
