Hello VJ members, I have a situation. I have a goddaughter that I want to adopt & bring to the US but I can't because I'm too young. My mother has an interview scheduled at the embassy this month. Someone just told me that I could have had my mom adopt my goddaughter & they both could've have come together. Is that true? Now I'm wondering if she can still get adoption paper together & bring them to the interview.Would that work?I really hope that there is a way. Please help me sort this out. :bonk: Thank you

In order to bring a foreign whom you've adopted to the United States, the person must be American, and your mother will be a green card holder. The time it takes to adopt a child from another country and bring that child to the United States varies widely. Generally intercountry adoption takes 1-4 years, though it can take longer.

Is the child related to you? Are her parents dead? If her parents are dead, you may be able to adopt her and bring her over. If her parents are alive- even just one, and even if that parent is not in her life- then the only way to bring the child over is by you moving down there for 2 years, adopt, then have physical and legal custody of the child for those two years before starting immigration proceedings.

The plan with your mom won't work, because that makes your god daughter your sister and even if the above requirements are met, it takes 10+ years to petition a sister of a US citizen for a visa.
