This has been mentioned in the Syrian threads that were recently posted with the Christians being conflicted over supporting Assad because he protected them and now they're among the civilians being slaughtered. PRI the world did an audio package on Coptic Christians in Egypt fearing their future under the rising Islamist parties after participating in the Arab Spring. The images from the protests in Tahrir square showed Christians and Muslims praying together and protecting each other. Now the Christians wonder where they fit in with the New Egypt.

It's an interesting insight into the dynamics. It's 6 and half minutes long and you can follow the link to listen to it here: Coptic Cairo

Friday, Feb. 24, 2012: Coptic Christians in Egypt had a degree of protection during the reign of Hosni Mubarak, but now that Islamist parties dominate the new parliament, Egypt's Copts are feeling increasingly vulnerable.

It's really unfortunate we're moving backwards instead of forward. While Sharia Law is imposed to muslims and non-muslims alike, we're debating contraception and abortion by the clinically insane mind of Santorum. When are we realizing that: hijab, prayer times, fasting and other muslim rituals.... just like fasting, the 7th day, lent, and other christian rituals are a personal choice? Religion is about our personal relationship with God. Politics are the opposite; these are rules to obey to have a better relationship with our fellow man and to establish an order. While there are rules that trascend the religious lines, such as- thou shall not kill- most should represent justice for all.

Don't ever do anything you're not willing to explain the paramedics.

The Dude - My dh has made similar statements that would agree with you. That those who fought in this revolution didn't fight for that and they worked side by side with Christians respecting each other. They thought that what happened in Tahrir square would be a reflect of how the country would be governed but now it's turning to be majority rule instead of protect the minority too.

NY_BX - I was contemplating the separation of church and state or in this case mosque and state in the newly formed democratic societies in this region and if it will ever be possible for them one day to reach this point of consensus.

Later today after work we were discussing the topic over tea and I learned that the internet is on fire with jokes being made about what happened today with the case.

They're referencing this movie from the 1950's golden era of Egyptian cinema.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VVcPPdLCep0&fb_source=message

In this movie the husband and wife repeat a sequence or theme around 25 times throughout it. An example of this scene begins in the movie around 10:28 minutes in. The husband will say something like, "This will never happen again. I will never kneel." Then the wife says 'Eh?" And the husband replies "Alright then you should know it won't happen again the next time." Those are not the exact words for this scene but it goes like this many times until the end scene where the outcome is different.

Online the joke is that this is the Egyptian PM and Hillary Clinton. The PM said last week that "Egypt will never bow" to the Americans will with the threats of taking away the 1.5 billion aid package as designated during the peace treaty. And the wife is Hillary Clinton saying "Eh?" to him.

مصر لن تركع

لإنها سوف تسجد ...

"Egypt will not bow it will prostrate itself."
