Ours was Notirized in Greece....

Has any1 else ran into this problem? Is it there mistake? Is a foreign notirazation acceptable.

Please advise....

She has another appointment next Tuesday (10/10)....

If the sponsor is in the United States, the affidavit may be sworn to or affirmed before an immigration officer (see any USCIS District or sub-office) or before a notary public or other official authorized to administer oaths for general purposes. If the sponsor is outside the United States, the affidavit must be sworn to or affirmed before a U.S. consular or immigration officer.

I only offer advice - not even legal. Just the plain and simple kind.

BigBoss,

It's been made very clear on I-134 instructions that it has to be notarized by an US notary. They will not accept a Greece notarized Aff. of support form. My suggestion. Fill out the form again, get it notarized here in US and send it to her express mail. This should take care of any problems. Good Luck!

The point of notarization is to attest to the fact that you signed the form.

Therefore the notary has to watch you sign the form before they attest to that.

If you live in the US, that notary in Greece couldn't have possibly seen you sign the form. It also appears that only the acknowledgements of consular officials are 'trusted' by the State Department for US citizens residing abroad and filing.

There are notaries on nearly every corner in the US, most notably at financial institutions.

Thanks for the info.

I got it notarized here, yesterday and shepped it next day w/ DHL.

I was in Greece during the summer for vacations...so I figured let me get it notarized while i'm here...BAD MISTAKE.

Thanks

Yia Sou,

Your plan could have worked.. IF you had gone to the Embassy in Athens or the Consulate in 'Saloniki. You can get a US Notary Public there.

Ah well, no harm no foul---all is done and I'm sure the visa will be issues as soon as she takes the docs back in (she might be able to mail them if that's better).

A GREAT reminder for folks who don't knwo that foreign notaries are different than US ones; thanks for sharing your experience!

In the US, a Notary Public (note the terminology) can usually be found in a bank, insurance office, my lawyer has one working there, financial advisor's office, mailing service offices, er, seems they turn up everywhere.

This person witnesses your signature, checks your ID to see that you are who you say you are and that's it.

If you find you need a US Notary Public while you are overseas, you'll find at least one in any US Embassy or Consulate.
