USC relocating with spouse- anyone else?

Hi all,

My husband and I are together, living outside the US. Once his visa is approved we are planning to apply for jobs and ideally, find at least one of us a job before we move. Has anyone else had a similar experience? how did it work out for you? I know I'm looking pretty far ahead but I'm wondering if I'm being realistic in thinking we'll find jobs from outside the country? Any feedback or thoughts VJers?

Maybe you should specify what kind of jobs or what field we are talking about.

There is quite a big difference between finding a job in Burger King and a high paid job.

Most employers will be wanting an interview. That is my experience anyway.

We're both currently in hospitality. I'm a resort revenue manager and he's an executive sous chef. It's kind of specific but there seems to be demand!

I'd probably plan to have the USC move back to the US first to establish domocile, find a job, find a place to live etc. it's always easier to find a job when you're in the city you're looking, but it wouldn't be impossible to get a job before moving. Just depends on the situation and how motivated someone is. I'd plan to fly in for interviews etc.

If you move to a large city like NYC for example, you'll probably have little trouble findign something in those fields, but I'd plan for 2-3 months of getting settled in and finding a job.

My fiancee (USC) landed a public health job in Hawaii when she was in Denmark. They had a couple of phone interviews though.

Make sure you get some references from your previous employers. Employers in the US seem to really like to see some references.
