I just had this conversation with my wife last night. Whatever name is on the Passport, the visa will be issued in that name from what I understand as well, and I think it follows that the green card and SS Card will come in the same name as the visa and passport.

It is very difficult to have the name change done in Colombia before she gets her passport and visa. She has to change her name on her cedula, national ID card, which takes forever to do, then she can use the cedula to get her passport issued in her married name. What we decided to do is to use her maiden name through the whole visa and immigration process. When she gets to the US, we will look into changing her name on her US legal documents and identification cards. It is easier for us to change her name once she gets to the US for us.

I think you would need to have your married named reflected in your passport so that name flows through and matches up to all the other immigration documents for the CR-1/IR-1 situation from what I understand.

Maybe someone else with more experience can correct me if I am wrong.

here is what iv read i will copy and past it:

POE is simple. If you are with her go through with her in either visitor line or citizen/lpr line (whichever is shorter). The CBP will ask for her package that arrives with her passport/visa and this package is to remain sealed until CBP opens it. They will take her fingerprints and then you two will be escorted to a secondary room. Here they will look through the documents. In Atlanta the had both of us sign a statement verifying that we understood we had to apply for lifting of conditions within 3 months of the 2 year anniversary of POE. If anything is wrong in your paperwork have it corrected there. My wife's green card was set to be delivered in her maiden name so they did a name change there (free) and when the card arrived it was in her married name. Her passport will be stamped but, unlike the other poster stated, she is not allowed to work until she receives a SSN. My wife's GC arrived in 3 weeks and at 4 weeks still no SSN. She went to the office and they processed it and she will have the number in 3 days and the card in two weeks. Either with or without you she will manage the POE just fine. The agents in Atlanta at least seemed to understand that the applicant had already been through hell and were all so very nice and professional. Good luck to both of you.

Ah, ok, that will be very good if we can make a name change right there for the GC. When we pass through CBP, I will ask them if we can do the name change right there for the green card, that would be very convenient.

i do hope this one will work.. when will ur wife arrive in us?

We have been waiting 30 days now for the NOA2 for the I-130 petition so we are still early in the process. I do not know when she will be here, depends on when the govt approves all the paperwork. When are you coming? Do post on this thread if you are able to change your name at the CBP?

The only way to change your passport to your married name as I understand it, is to attend the CFO Guidance and Counseling Program and get your certificate. Then with the certificate go to passport office and edit your passport to married name. You need 2 ID's in married name to attend the CFO, postal and NBI will work, along with other required documents.
