Hi, I'm filing out my first W-4 and need help with W-4. I'm married and my husband has a job.

A Enter "1" for yourself if no one else can claim you as a dependent. - my husband can't claim me as a dependent so I enter 1, correct?

C Enter "1" for your spouse. But, you may choose to enter "0" if you are married and have either a working spouse or more than one job. (Entering "0" may help you avoid having too little tax withheld). - should I enter 0 or 1?

My Immigration Journey:

K1: June 2010 - December 2010

AOS: April 2011 - June 2011

ROC: April 2013 - August 2013

Naturalization: March 2014 - August 2014

If you file jointly, you claim yourselves ..two dependents [if there are no children].

If both spouses work [and there are no children] best to claim one dependent on the larger paycheck and zero on the smaller and to overpay somewhat rather than under-deduct. Then take a refund at filing time.

This is what we do here.

Cheers

Appreciate your answer but I'm new to all this US tax stuff so I don't know what that means when it comes to filling out the form.

We file jointly, have no children and my husband has the larger paycheck. So do I put A - 1 and C - 0?

I would put zero on that line, because your spouse has another job. You can do it however you want, though. The form you are filling out helps determine how much to take out for taxes each paycheck. At the end of the year you will file your taxes and see if your estimates were right - either you get some tax back or pay some. By putting zero on that line, you are trying to make sure that you don't underpay taxes now and don't owe more at the end of the year.

AOS for my husband
8/17/10: INTERVIEW DAY (day 123) APPROVED!!

ROC:
5/23/12: Sent out package
2/06/13: APPROVED!
