Original documents for NVC

Hi everyone,

We're currently at the 1st stage of the CR1 process (awaiting decision from USCIS) and it's time to start gathering documents for the 2nd stage.

I'm curious to know if anyone has sent the original documents (police certs, birth certs, etc) to the NVC and also required to show originals at the Embassy interview or just photocopies. I had to send away to Australia for a copy of my birth certificate, not realising that I may possibly need more than 1 - this could mean my passport has to be sent away again for proof and no visits to the US to see my wife for a while...!!

I've scanned the forums but it seems as clear as mud to me..

Your original birth certificate will be sent to the embassy by the NVC, so they will have it.

BUT birth certs expire. Depending on where you're interviewing, they might ask for a more recent one, if yours is too "old". You should look on department of state website what they say about the validity of Australian b c, and maybe contact the embassy where you'll interview to ask them.

For example, in Paris, they want your French birth certificate to be less than 3 months old. It is country specific.

Pre-Interview Forms / Items:

1. Completed and signed OF-169.

2. Completed and signed Of-230 Part 1 and 2 forms.

3. I-864 Affidavit of Support Form along with past 3 year U.S tax returns (or transcripts) and any other financial documents required.

4. A copy of intending immigrants biographic page of passport(s) including expiration date.

5. Original or certified "long" birth certificate. *

6. Original adoption decree. (if applicable)

7. Marriage certificate. (if applicable)

8. Divorce decree(s) or death certificate(s) (if applicable)

9. Police certificate(s) **

10. Court and prison records.(if applicable)

NVC Document intake? For CIVIL Documents - it's 1 original or certified copy, plus a regular photocopy, per document type.

Nope, USEM Paris wants French birth certs less than 3 months old. You can see that in interview reviews for Paris.

I think that's because here, a manuscript mention is added to your original birth record (the big book they keep at registrar) when you get married, divorced, or widowed or when you die.
