I was trying to find this made for TV movie that's about twenty years old or so but it fits the UK forum to a "T". It's about this free wheeling fun loving woman brought up in the Caribbean on a plantation who hooks up with this Englishman (young English lord). Eventually she leaves the island with him for England...against her wishes, and she becomes so depressed by the stuffiness of the people there, weather, and lifestyle that she burns the house down with her in it...suicide. It's based in the 18th 19th century. I want to say Barbara Carrara is in it, but it didn't check out on wiki. Seriously though that thread over there is like watching paint dry.

Sounds like Jean Rhys's Wide Sargasso Sea. Great book!star_smile.gif It's essentially a prequel of sorts to Wuthering Heights.

Didn't know there was a film adaptation -- I'll have to check it out. Thanks!smile.gif

Nope - Jane Eyre! It's the story from the perspective of the mad wife. :)

However, I don't see that it was adapted for TV twenty years ago... there's a recent adaptation, but not an old one.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0108565/ <---- I would have never guessed it. I was fishing in the dark on google trying to figure out the title of that movie. That be the one though...you nailed it. Great movie up until the time she sails for England...then it got depressing especially when she offed herself at the end of the movie.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

The Brits* are among the best when it comes to grimness. Come to think of it, Russians are no slouches in that category either.

*In this case, sorta British?

Pick your favorite moment of literary grimness.

Anna Karenina throwing herself on the train tracks.

Or Sydney Carton on the block.

Our journey together on this earth has come to an end.

I will see you one day again, my love.
