If the phone is NOT a tri-band or quad-band, then give it to the brother. But activate a SIM roaming card in the Phils to bring to US with you. THen, when in US, buy a a tri-band or quad-band on Ebay or Amazon for a fair price, and use it for cheap, portable texting on Chikka.com

My wife brought her cheap Nokia phone with the Smart roaming enabled. The good Samsung Android phone she gave to her sister, since I intended to give her a new phone when she got here. The Smart roaming phone failed to work in Japan or Minneapolis. I am not sure of the specs on that phone, it was a cheap one we bought while while we tried to get another phone repaired, it was knick named the pangit phone. We had intended to use it mainly to keep in contact on her way here and while she was waiting to get through immigration. She wasn't the only from the Philippines having the same problem that day. Her Smart roaming sim never has worked here on that phone, makes me wonder who they partnered with in the USA. Previously I had a Globe roaming sim that I used in the Minneapolis area with no issues but it gets a bit expensive on the USA side. What we mainly rely on is smart phones with yahoo messenger installed. We can send SMS to phones in the Philippines for free, and they can text us for I believe its 2P, but might be 2.5P.
