To the original question. At least for Honduras (the only international flights for me lately), the undocumented visitor of the US who intends to return home (I think it's called 'voluntary deportation'), must contact the consulate prior to travel and request a page that states the person is who they say they are and that they have not committed any crimes while in the US. It includes their photo and a seal from the consulate. I believe it costs around $100. Sometimes I get chatty while standing in long lines

Well, my friend overstayed a work visa by a couple of years (the company went bust so he couldn't renew and at the time he was engaged to a USC but that didn't work out...) and he hoped to quietly slip home and come back again in six months, but they figured him out at the airport and gave him a ten-year ban. He's not allowed back into the US for another five years.

I can't fly without showing my ID. Can you?

Not everybody flies. I have not crossed the land border since I was very young so I am not so sure about that. What does a Colombian illegal in Texas do to go home with that many borders to cross?

They can cross the border into Mexico and then take a bus to Colombia,it takes about a week!
